I was in esl when I started kindergarten since I moved to the States from Korea. I got out of esl quickly, but I can't imagine that I knew how to read until I was in 1st grade.
When did you know how to read?

I think I was in kindergarten. My younger sister learned how to read earlier (like age 4) because she always wanted to do what I was doing. She ended up being Valedictorian for her high school class...smarty pants.

In kindergarten...Basic words like cat, dog, etc. I remember this because my teacher took me to read to the principal (it was a big deal!)!

I remember taking tests to get into kindergarten so I guess I was able to read by 4.

I would say 4-5, I remember going into kindergarten a little more advanced than some of the other kids. I was reading books when some were still learning letters.

I was late and didn't start reading until a little before first grade. They taught reading in kindergarten, but I was very good at memorizing anything that rhymes. Of course, pretty much all the books for that age range rhyme, and I tricked my teacher into thinking I was the best reader in the class by memorizing every book she read us. It was my dad who noticed that when I "read" my eyes looked at the pictures instead of following the words. He was the one who finally taught me how to read.

I don’t know what age exactly, but I know I could read before I entered school (Kindergarten).

Probably in first grade. My school didn't have an esl program when I was in kindergarten so I was placed in a regular class. I didn't even understand what the teacher was saying, so definitely could not read. But by first grade, I realized I was able speak and understand English so I assume that's when I learned to read as well.

Age 3. I remember reading Little House on the Prarie and thinking that an antelope=== blizard, so I drew this whole picture of a great big antelope (which I drew as a snowstorm) and I remember being so embarassed that I'd gotten it all wrong. I hated being wrong. But I did love Little House.

Both Wagon Sr. and I learned how to read by watching Sesame Street... according to our parents, we were both reading by age 3. My brother was 2 years older so he was learning to read at that time, so I would practice with him.

I went to Montessori (so kids got to learn at their own pace) and I learned to read at 3. Started reading chapter books by the time I was 5 and have been a voracious reader ever since!

English was a second language for me when I was young. So like you MrsBee, it was during 1st grade (I think).

I was reading in Kindy, but probably before that. I don't think it was as early as 3 though.

Sometime before kindergarten. I vividly remember my kindergarten teacher giving me a book called "An Apple" to read and I was disappointed that there weren't harder books. Always obsessed with reading.

I came to the US in first grade and picked up reading fairly quickly. I started reading in Korea at four or five

@Mrs. Jacks: That's so cute! I was the same way. I loved Little House too! Though I was always so curious about "grown-up stuff" that I was disappointed in the books where Laura is older because she didn't write about making out with husband or anything.
I started reading when I was 3. I wanted to read so bad and begged my mom to teach me, so she used a kindergarten homeschool program my aunt used with her kids. By kindergarten I was reading chapter books. I still LOVE to read!
