LO is 6 months old and I want to start doing baby signs with her. What signs are best to start with? When did you start, and how did it go?

definitely "more." both charlie and olive were able to pick it up really easily. they probably won't be able to sign until they're a little bit older (9-10 months), but you can use more for so many things from drinks to food to toys....

@Mrs. Bee: Good to know! Do you think starting now is a good idea, or is it best to wait until they actually have the coordination to sign back?

I agree with more being a good one to start with! I would still start now, even though it may take a little while for LO to do it. They can start making the association now and might pick it up quicker than you think! (I started with food related signs, more, all done, eat)

@creativemomma15: Ok cool, did you start with one at a time and then add them in over time? If so, how long did you wait before introducing another sign? Or did you just do them all at once?

"More" is good - very helpful! I never did sign with LO but her daycare does so when LO started at 13 months, she would come home and start signing things. I knew the basics because a friend signed with her LO and it's unbelievable how helpful it is!

Her first sign was more, then milk, then water. More is super easy because cause and effect is easy to create. We went to baby sign classes at 5ish months and our teacher would turn on a bubble machine, turn it off, sign more, then turn it back on again. Some of the older kids picked it up in a few weeks!

We use change (for diaper), milk, bath, mommy, and Daddy most often with our 4 month old. We need to add more, but I tend to forget to sign the other ones.

Both of my kids signed "dog" around 9 months. Not the most helpful sign, but it was nice to know they understood and could communicate! Otherwise, our first signs were more, all done, eat, milk, and drink. DS can do all of those signs now at 11 months, so I think it's good to start early, even if they can't sign back for a few months. The sooner you start, the sooner they'll sign back!

@Bao: you can start at 6 months. no harm in starting early!

I also like "all done" it is really nice when they are in the high chair and you can't tell if they are distracted or done eating. The down side is I have seen many kids try to use it to get out of things they don't like
I am not normally an advocate of tv but if the Baby Signing Time shows are great!

more, milk, and please were the order of our first few. Other helpful ones are - eat and all done!

we started off with more, milk, all done, and thank you... bath and sleep too!

My nephew started with "more" "please" and "thank you." He can talk now, but he still always signs "please" and "thank you" when he says them... it's so cute.

we started with 'more' and 'milk' at 5 months. A few days shy of 8mo he signed for 'more' fruit and has used it a few times for other things (book and toy). He doesn't sign for 'milk' yet but gets upset if I sign milk and don't give it to him.
Now at 8mo we are working on 'please', 'help' and 'book'
I really like the app Marley signs!

@photojane: I cannot wait until my LO uses his signs to exaggerate!

We just started with all done. Every time we finish solids I sign all done with my LO. I Should add in more too. My LO is 6 months old.

does anyone have a resource they recommend for learning the signs?? book? just youtube it??
pomegranate / 3383 posts
@scg00387: we've borrowed signing time DVDs from the library, as well as a couple of books. Sometimes I'll just google a sign too.
We started with more, water, eat and all done. We also sign milk, lights on, fan, help and ball. My LO can sign more, help, ball (these 3 are similar), lights on and milk (these 2 are similar). He's not 100% consistent though but can sign them in context.

We have been signing "more" and "all done" when eating solids for a while, a couple months. Now at nearly 10 months, she really gets it. She signs for more when she wants more finger foods (puffs, melts) and all done when the jar or bowl of food is empty or she finishes a cracker or something. The next ones I want to do are milk, please, thank you, mommy, and daddy.

We started off with more, milk, and all done. I used Google and YouTube the most. I have a book too, but it's better for learning foods or animals.

I started "more" "all done" "Thank you" and "please" at 4 1/2 months. Super early I know, but I figured I will just use it when I say these words and hopefully they sink in when she's in her highchair eating.

@Bao: I just started with a few and then added some as he picked up on it. I need to be more diligent with it though! I am not sure how many experts wold recommend starting at once.

We started "milk" "mommy" and "more" when he was 4 months. He started signing "milk" to me when he was 6.5 months.

@Bao: I started with nurse and more. I thought it easiest to start when my daughter was really using language, because I didn't have the patience to do it for a long time with no result. So I started when she had her first few words right before a year, and she picked it up effortlessly. We did nurse, more, all done, drink, eat. Even now that she talks a ton, she still uses more and all done very often.

@littlebittyhouse: Yesssss. My daughter does this very big 'all done' hand wave (and she says ALL DONE in the cutest voice) when she's really sick of something. It is freaking adorable.

I started with want milk? Yes milk please. Also want clean diaper? Yes clean diaper please. I progress to more and eat
