Okay so after reading the comments, I scrolled back up and the dress was blue and black (after being gold and white). I wonder if something about the way your eyes process light is adjusted by the movement or the screen (or some made up theory like that).
So everyone who can't see it, try scrolling up and report back!

I am dying. I see white and gold, and seriously can't even fathom seeing black!

My entire family is seeing blue and black so I can't imagine where the white and gold is coming from. I've scrolled back and forth several times and tried different room lighting.

I see blue. I CANNOT see white no matter how hard I try.
The "black" seems more bronze to me though.

Right now with my contacts on I see blue and black (to be exact would be brown and indigo). I have scrolled up and down and adjusted the brightness settings but still don't see white and gold. I am going to try with my glasses on in a bit, so bizarre!

Blue and black! I can't see white at all. I love that this dress has stopped social media.

I'm so late to this - I've had a cough and went to bed before this broke the internet.
Woke up at 4am, read this on my phone in pitch black, backlit iPhone. Very clearly gold/tan and white.
Up now at 7am with lights on and it's very dark/royal) blue and black.

Out of those choices I picked white and gold but I actually see a light blue and gold - cannot see black at all!
Just looked on my phone and still see light blue and gold - how in world can people see black?

My husband just looked and said "blue and gold." I didn't even know that was a possibility.

Mr bee and charlie see white and gold. I can switch it back and forth from white and gold and blue and black. I see blue and black more often, but if I tilt my phone or scroll I can go back to white and gold.
The dress is actually blue and black, but it is some kind of angle/lighting that it tricks the eye! According to the Buzzfeed poll, the vast majority see it as white and gold.

I just stared at it for 30 seconds and it kept changing from white/gold to blue/purple. I never looked away! So crazy. I thought it was a hoax but I guess not!

Just saw this pic of the actual dress and I am shocked how it could even be this color??

I saw blue and black initially and DH saw white and gold. I stared at it again and could see how he thought white and gold.

Okay, so I see white and gold.... and have only ever seen white and gold. but I just realised that if I move to the side of the computer screen and look from the edge, it looks blue and black. I bet that's why so many couples are seeing it differently - because one says to the other "look at this" and they then peer from the side???
Ohh, ohh, I just realised that if you're on a laptop and you lift the laptop so that the screen tilts back - it becomes blue and black!

@Mamaof2: @Cherrybee: That's so crazy!
I see more white and gold even though the white does have a tinge of blue to it. No way the gold is black though!

@Mamaof2: I only ever see like a dull filtered version of this black and blue. I can't fathom how anyone is seeing white no matter how hard I try even though my brother told me I'm crazy.

I initially saw gold and white when I looked from my iphone this morning. Now that I am on a laptop, I see blue and black....so crazy!!!!

I see ugly?
ETA: Ok, I've been reading about this dress now for a while. The original picture I saw looked gold and white. Even with people trying to take that photo and show blue and black, I STILL see muddy gold/brown and white/cream.
When I see the actual dress, as posted above, I obviously see blue and black.

For those of you who see different things as your SO/friends, etc. I'm curious, if you copy the image into Paint and use the colour dropper tool to get the colour of the black/gold and then remove the image and make the background just that colour, what colour do you see? Is it still the same colour you saw on the dress?
I see white and gold, and it blows my mind that other people see black and blue.

Blue and Black. Because of the dim lighting it tricks your eyes initially to think white and gold, for me anyway

@Cherrybee: Moving around doesn't matter. DH only sees black and blue, no matter what, and I only see gold and white, no matter what.
I think this has to be weirder for people who see it black and blue. I can look at a normal picture of it, and at least see what it's supposed to look like. People who see it right to begin with have no way of even imagining what we're seeing white and gold.

@Synchronicity: no, we aren't seeing those shades of blue and black. It's a more muted like.... Cornflower blue almost? And dark dark brownish black. I'm someone that initially saw white and gold and had it randomly change. I now can't see it any other color, which is beyond frustrating since I HAVE seen it previously. Here's the explanation though- it has nothing to with angle or what screen people are looking on, and more to do with whether your eyes' cones can pick up on the blue wavelength.

I looked at it for the first time last night and was like, white and gold, clear as day! Now today I can't see anything but black and blue.

At first, I saw white and gold and was like uhh what's the debate but the next time I saw blue and black - but never the dark royal blue. Crazy!
pomelo / 5607 posts
I think the best part of this is that no one can even agree on WHY we're seeing it differently. Some say it's your eyes, some say it's your brain processing things differently. So weird!

My husband and I disagree about this. I see blue and black even with the bad initial photo that set this off. He sees white and gold. Last night, he kept on teasing me about being wrong. I could maybe see the gold with the bad lighting, but what he saw as white, I could see as maybe baby blue at best.
After our tough night, teasing about internet dress memes and llamas running loose made it a little better.

@.twist.: I agree on the ugly. Why is no one pointing out what an ugly dress it is?
pineapple / 12802 posts
@Torchwood: From everything I've read, it seems like this is the answer to the argument to end all arguments:
What matters is whether or not you perceive the photo as overexposed in general or as having a deep shadow cast over the dress. Your brain will automatically correct for whichever one you believe, and you'll see either white/gold or blue/black. I personally see white/gold, but the dress in real life is very much blue and black.

@.twist.: It makes the most sense to me! Especially for explaining why people are sometimes seeing one then the other.

So I originally saw it yesterday as the white/gold. After scrolling back up the page it was the black/blue. This happened after focusing on the blown-out portion of the photo in the upper right. After looking at that for a few seconds and then back to the dress, it slowly faded into the black/blue. Now I can ONLY see it that color. So crazy!!
