I'm always hearing to take anything that isn't nailed down. What kinds of stuff did you "acquire" from your room when you were discharged?

Everything except linens (blankets and burp cloths which they told us we couldn't). So pads, mesh panties, nursing pads, diapers, wipes, thermometer, formula and nipples, sitz bath, spray bottle. All super useful.

Here in Ontario, Canada, less is offered (no baby stuff), so just the pads, mesh panties, peri bottle, sitz bath and salt.

We were given a peri bottle, a big bag of the icy pads, regular pads, Tucks wipes, a sitz bath, nipple cream, 2 baby shirts, 2 hats, a pack of diapers, several pairs of mesh panties, a brush and comb set, and several blankets.
For going to their "Camp Baby" class at the hospital the day after he was born we were given a Baby-Proofing kit (with like the plastic things that go over outlets and stuff like that), and a handmade baby blanket (made and donated by...actually I don't remember who she said made them).

At my hospital in Vancouver (which I loved and had a huge one person room) there was not much provided! There were a set number of sanitary pads I could use during my 48hr stay, and signs in my bathroom reminding me of the limit and suggesting a nearby pharmacy to buy more if I needed them. They also only provided 10 newborn diapers for the whole stay. Newborns go through many more than 10 dipes in the first 48 hrs!! Nurse slipped me a few extra to use, but I had to ask for them one at a time:)
The only thing I took home was a peri bottle and an extra pair of mesh panties.

I'm in Ontario too, the sent me home with a peri bottle, some diapers, and a tube of vaseline that they use as a bum cream for the little ones, as well as a few pads for me. We brought our own clothes, blankets etc for baby girl .

I think we're a rare exception where we didn't take anything! But we were in a private hospital that charged us for every little thing- seriously got an itemized list. We did however get a gift bag to take home with a blanket, towel, and personalized plate (plus a bunch of samples for cream, soap etc).
grapefruit / 4819 posts
Wow, we didn't get/take any of that stuff! We were given a knit hat made by the grandma's society - they knit hats for all the newborns. Other than that, it was all our own stuff in the hospital. They don't do mesh underwear, peri bottles, tucks pads, or any of that stuff here...and to be honest, I didn't need any of it anyway.
I guess that could be the one downside of socialised medicine - no free stuff from the hospital - but I'll still take our socialised system any day!
Oh wait, correction - I got a New Mum bag that had some samples of nappy rash cream and a few other travel size items in there. I was pretty excited about it!

i plan on taking EVERYTHING. i'm just going to shove & run!
today while working at the hospital, i overheard asking a mom if she could take a few of the receiving/swaddle blankets. of course the nurse said "technically, i have to tell you no." the mom was really upset because she wanted to make a memory box with it. i was thinking, "LADY, why did you ask?!" ignorance is bliss!
