I'm just wondering, if people ask you if your LO sleeps through the night, when do you say yes? LO sleeps 4-6 hour stretches at night now, which is enough I'm not exhausted anymore. But I don't really think of it as through the night because we go back to bed even if she sleeps 6 hours, so "the night" for us is 10 hours or so.
I'm totally happy with her sleep, especially since she's only 3 weeks adjusted, but I'm curious.

For me it meant "a reasonable nighttime hour until a reasonable morning hour" - the first time I said she STTN was when she went 9pm-5am unbroken. I'm sorry but to me, midnight-6am is not STTN. That's a 6 hour stretch.

When they wake up when it's time to get up for the day. If I fed her then put her back down I didn't consider that STTN.

Agree with all of the above! It's not STTN if I have to get out of bed and it's still dark outside (unless it's dark because it's winter).

Mine does not STTN at all so my standards are low. For me as long as you don't wake up when I'm sleeping, it's good enough! So if she goes down at 7, wakes up before 10-11pm, a-ok with me! Haha. But I agree the true STTN definition is really no MOTN wake ups!

No feedings or wake ups with a normal bedtime. Prob 7-8 hours for a younger baby and over 10-11 otherwise.

STTN for us means no middle of the night wake ups.
She didn't start doing this until very recently at 7.5 months.

No wake ups. If they wake at five, eat, then snooze for two hours I don't consider that STTN.

i know the official definition is something like 4 - 6 hours, but in my opinion, i say they are sleeping through the night only if i am sleeping the night!
even my toddler who is almost 3 yo has phases where he wakes at 2 or 3am and that is definitely not STTN even if he has been asleep since 8pm.

for me, when I don't have to wake up and deal with their business, lol. So about 9-6, give or take. I have bedtime hours like a child, though.

@JoJoGirl: yup, totally agree with this.
6 hours is great for a babe that little. T has started sleeping 9-11 hours in a row at 5 months. I consider that sleeping thru the night even if she goes back down. If I get 7-8 hours straight that is total bliss, especially if I wake up after 7.

I would take midnight to 6am as sleeping through the night. 7am would be a bonus but 6am would do.

No MOTN wake-ups. For a while LO would wake up between 5 & 6 AM and nurse in bed with me and doze for another hour or so. I still considered that STTN because we COULD have gotten up for the day... I was just happy to buy more time!

Totally agree with @Mrs.Someone: - people should not be asking you this! It is one of my pet peeves and of course everyone stopped asking about sleep by the time my LO started STTN...
Some say 7-8 hrs. In my case it is 7pm-5:30am because that's how long my kid sleeps and there doesn't seem to be a single thing I can do to make him sleep later.

I also think it's age dependent. I would say C, at 6 weeks was STTN was she was sleeping 10pm-7am. But now at 2 years old, I would say sleeping 7-7 or 8-8 is STTN

Not waking up at all during the night. For us it is down at 7:30 and not waking up until 7/8 the next morning.

@Torchwood: P.S. I also HATE when people ask this, I just don't get the reasoning unless they plan to stay the night and help if LO isn't STTN...LOL
If they arnt STTN then they rattle off unwanted advice as if they are the sleep gurus and you suck
Or in our case if they are they then tell you ohhh beware your next one will be hell....,

11-12 hours of sleep with no wakeups. Even when he was doing 7pm-4/5am i didn't consider it sttn because I wasn't ready to get up for the day and he went back down.
7pm - 6am felt like true sttn.

From bedtime to up for the day without a wake up.
For my kids that be 8:30pm-7am for my 2 year old and 7pm-7am for my 7 month old.
