DS is super picky. I usually send some fruit, pbj, a pouch, pirates booty or mac and cheese and chicken strips.
He doesn't eat lunch meat, or meat hardly at all so sandwiches are out of the question...grrr...

I sent DD lunch till she was a little over 2. They would heat Her lunch up so it was leftovers. But we always had peas, edamame and shrimp when there were no leftovers. And always a fruit of some kind, apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, etc

Almost 4 year old: Meat of some sort (he usually loves meat but hasn't been eating it at school) hot dogs, salami, pepperoni, hamburger, leftovers. Veggie: baby carrots, peas (frozen or freeze dried), trader joes green bean chips, leftovers if we have any. Fruit: cutie, apple slices, grapes, freeze dried fruit.
We don't typically send carbs because he gets those for snack. Daddy will make him a sandwich if he makes lunch. He can't have peanuts so no pbj.

Some examples of things we sent this past week (in a Planetbox Rover which I learned about on HB - can't say enough good things about it):
Main course
- Bean and cheese tamale (preschool will heat it up)
- Applegate chicken and apple sausage (he LOVES this)
- Tortellini
- Homemade salmon patties (he always eats all of this - similar to this recipe but without capers: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/salmon-croquettes-0)
- Sunbutter and jelly sandwich
Sides
- Watermelon
- Cantaloupe
- Grapes
- Blackberries
- Frozen peaches (that thaw out by lunchtime)
- Frozen peas with a little butter and salt
- Steamed zucchini (which he didn't eat at lunch but I offer his lunch leftovers when he gets home, and he did eat them then)
- Broccoli (which he rarely eats but I keep offering)
- Cherry tomatoes
- Cucumber spears/red bell pepper with ranch to dip
- Babybel cheese
- 1 alphabet cookie since there's space in his lunch box for something sweet

LO is 19 months and always get leftovers from the previous night's dinner. We have a thermos bento, and it keeps her food hot for about 6 hours.
Examples are: taco soup, butternut squash pasta, salmon and broccoli, beef roast with potatoes and carrots, fish stick and green beans, etc.

Our daycare won't heat things up so if you want to pack something warm it has to go in a thermos.
-pasta with just a bit of butter, some frozen peas and corn (in a thermos)
-cottage cheese (his fave), cheddar cheese, full-fat yoghurt
-berries, half a banana, plum cut in slices
-sugar snap peas, cucumber, tomato
-crackers
-raisins

They heat his up so often it's leftovers or:
PBJ
Chicken nuggets (Trader joes all white meat)
Mini pizzas (TJ's too)
Turkey dog
Pasta
And always all of the following on the side--pouch, cheese, a veggie (broccoli, corn, tomatoes, peas, or carrots) and a fruit.
He's 2 and a big eater.

Usually leftovers. We also send snacks. So for example, tomorrow's lunch:
Leftover quesadilla (spinach, cheese, and some fried fish in a tortilla)
Peanut butter and rice cake
Raisins
Cheese stick
Lara bar

Following because I have to start packing DS's lunch this fall, he will be 3. I think we'll sometimes do soup after experimenting with some of the available thermoses to make sure it isn't too hot or too cold by lunchtime. Loving all the great advice here.

Following also because DD will start part-time soon until I go back to work full time and then she will go full time. She is a super picky toddler so I will have to pack her lunch everyday. Thanks for all of these ideas.

I'm pretty bad at this and LO only goes twice per week!
I try to do one dairy, one meat, one veggie, one fruit, and one grain. An average day would be a string cheese, cut up hot dog, peas, cut up grapes and a Belvita biscuit.
