Is it the sucking? Warmth and feel? Lol
I can always count on nursing to get my nap resistant 22 month old to pass out.

I know for sure in the evening time, and I think even throughout the day during the normal wake/sleep times, milk changes to have more cannabinoids to help baby relax! =)

What's not relaxing about it all?? Being hugged, nice warm beverage, repetitive motion and never thinking about some email they have to send or spreadsheet to update. I'm jealous!!

Warm, soft, smell of mom, and milk. What's not for a baby to love?

Warmth, security, comfort food, love, snuggles..... DS doesn't really nurse to sleep anymore but now he can "ask" for it by burying his face in my chest or plunging his hand in my shirt haha!

When they are little it for sure is whatever in the milk that makes them so relaxed but it is also the comfort.
I know now my 18 month old can't be getting much milk because I go over 24 hours without nursing her. But when she asks for it (only at bedtime) she immediately calms down and you can tell it helps her relax.

I was wondering too. I finally got my 19 month old weaned. She still wants it though, when shes really upset. Anyways, I brought her into bed with us this morning and she was upset. I got her calmed down and to sleep between us, and went back to sleep. I woke up a bit later, and there she was, laying belly to belly, holding my shirt and bra down, PASSED OUT with my boob in her mouth. I was like "what a little opportunist!" lol

I think its a combination of the warmth, being held, the milk comes out at just the right temperature, plus they can hear your heartbeat.. my 9 month oldjust gets this look of bliss on her face haha and starts stroking my chest. I will definitely miss it when we wean

@LivsMama: Hysterical! The milk coma is still funny, even after 9 months!

I actually think it's the sucking.....b/c my son is not breastfed and falls asleep at the bottle.

i think its the sucking and a full belly (because he falls asleep at both breast & bottle). I've noticed that if I'm relaxed/sleepy while nursing I have a higher rate of success of getting him to sleep, whereas if I'm just "there" or anxiously thinking of what needs to be done he won't fall asleep as quickly/easily/if at all.
