@tillma: it really depends on if your baby runs hot or cold. What temp you keep your house, etc. At this point I would def get long sleeve footed sleepers. Get a few cotton and fleece. And I would get at least one cotton and one fleece sleepsack to start with.
And also will you be swaddling? I think if you are s/he should be fine with just that? We never swaddled so I don't know if you swaddle AND sleep sack??

My DS runs on the hot side. He was born in January and we live in Baltimore and keep the house about 68F in the winter. For the first few months we just dressed him in a cotton footed sleeper / sleep & play and swaddled him in a A&A muslin blanket. Fleece was too much for him! Like @locavore_mama said, it really depends on your LO and your house temp.

I've never really liked the fleec because I feel it doesn't breathe. But we live in SoCal and I'm sure people in much colder climates prefer the fleece. Long-sleeved, footed sleepers under the sleepsacks.

I live in Toronto so it's already cold here. #2 is also due in October and he/she will probably wear a long-sleeve footed onesie and then swaddled twice? I don't know...

We are in Atl, so still hot here but she sleeps in footed pjs and a sleep sack. Might use fleece pjs depending on how cold her room is during the winter.

We keep the house at 72 degrees and LO sleeps in a cotton footed sleeper and a cotton swaddle sleep sack.

L was born last November and slept in fleece footed sleepers....and still does at 10 months! for the first several months we swaddled with arms in, then out. once he was in his crib at 6 months we did the sleep sacks briefly, then ditched them, tried blanket and then ditched that too.

we did an under onesie, a long sleeved, mittened, footed sleeper, a muslin swaddle and a merino swaddle over top. when he was a few weeks old we ditched the swaddle and used a doubled over cotton blanket over top of the merino.
we didn't have central heating so i don't know what temp the room was! this was southern hemisphere August, so that's like February for you northerners?

My LO hated being swaddled (like, *hated* it), so we never swaddled. We did do Halo fleece sleepsacks when she was little, with either a short-sleeve or a long-sleeve cotton onesie underneath, depending on how chilly it was.
Since around 5 months, she just sleeps in footed jammies, either cotton or fleece. I'm starting to put her in fleece now, and she'll stay in fleece until around May.
