The school ranking post got me thinking. Are you leaning towards public, private, religious or homeschool for K-12 schooling?
Unless something drastic changes in our school district; we are both firmly team public education.

Public. DH and I both went to (the same) public school. We bought our home in a really good public school district so that our kids could attend.

I go back and forth between public or homeschool, I have to wait and see! Whatever works best.

At this point, because we can't afford the private schools in our area (I mean $12k a year per student is just never going to be feasible for us ) we will likely homeschool. I'm a huge proponent of homeschooling.
Unless our kids get lucky and get drawn in the lottery for the local public charter STEM schools, we won't be pursuing public education.

@Greentea: a relative just started homeschooling her 5 year old because the options near her aren't great. She lives in the country and a lot of her neighbor's homeschool too. But I think she is only planning on K and basically taking it one year at a time! The big reason for her is she is a SAHM and her daughter has been home with her 24/7 and their PreK/K are full days so she felt that was too much for her daughter.

Public for sure! We're in a good district...and we're already paying for it anyways.

DD1 just started private. We plan to do private K-12.

@coopsmama: there are private schools here where the yearly tuition is more than what my college tuition was!

I grew up going to public schools and strongly believe in the system. However the schools are awful where we are and the best private schools are religious so that's likely the route we'll take.

@regberadaisy: It is so crazy! We will have 3 in high school at the same time since we just found out about #3. And I imagine by the time my kids get to HS it will be quite a bit more - $60k on a year of education for HS??? Not ever going to be doable.
It makes me sad because I went to private for junior high before deciding to be homeschooled for high school and loved it!

@regberadaisy: that's probably what I'd do, feel it out. Our Kindergarten is at 4 and full days! If it is good for her I'll support it, we'll just have to see.

@Greentea: oh wow! Why so young? Is it because of when her birthday falls?
pomelo / 5678 posts
@regberadaisy: No, our city does all Kindergarten at age 4! She'll be just turned. It is kind of a new thing, I think it has to do with wanting to limit costs for daycare etc., and also hopefully give kids an advantage (?) In some ways I am glad... I hope it is a good thing (?)

Hope to homeschool for kindergarten, then public schools. We both hated high school though, and our children feel the same way, we hope we can send them to a private school.

Private but only because my husband teaches at the school and we get free tuition. Otherwise it's public all the way! If our roles were reversed and DH was a SAHD he'd probably homeschool.

Likely private k-8. It's where she is currently in daycare 2 mornings a week and will go to preschool. My only hang up is that it's a Catholic school and we are not religious.

public/charter school for K-5
private school for 6-12
Both DH and I went to private schools and had great experiences with it. The public school district in Los Angeles is awful so A LOT of people chose private school once their kids get to middle school or high school.

We loosely plan on public, but depending on circumstances we are open to private or religious. I can't see us ever homeschooling though.
Dh went to public and religious, I went to religious school, my whole life, so we are pretty open to whatever suits our needs best. We just need to figure out where to live.

Public. I have no idea where there even would be a private school? No where close to where we live. Small town in Ontario Canada.

Public! We don't have extra money on top of paying taxes to go to private school, nor it makes sense for us to home school if we're already paying tax to our good district.

Public is our first choice right now but we are exploring private school options. We are hoping she gets into her zone school for UPK which is a good school. We've stayed in our crummy apartment for this school and district.

We are leaning towards a small, Christian private school because 1) its close to our house, 2) its a small school that can provide a very individualized learning experiences (and we've heard that's the case with parents who have children with a wide range of abilities and interests), 3) its quite reasonable in terms of tuition, 4) we are Christian so having that included in the curriculum is a bonus for us. The school also offers a preschool/pre-K program, so we can start our kids there as early as age 3 and it goes through 12th grade.
We bought in an area with an average school district (which we're fine with overall) and moved here from a town with excellent schools. It sounds crazy, but it was because we could get into those better public schools if we really wanted to because while that town has excellent public schools, its is so expensive to live in that that there actually aren't enough young children to fill the schools! (Its a major university town with a lot of status attached to living in there). The real estate prices are absolutely ridiculous and most families there live in really tiny, cruddy, rundown, old houses unless they can afford houses well above $1 million. And at that price, you get just a really average tract home. We did the math, and even if we sent our kids to private school, it would end up being much cheaper than living in the other town. Plus, we got a much better house and all of the special ed and disability services in the county are serviced by our town's school district - any special needs kid from the expensive town gets sent over here anyway. So we figured if we ended up having a child who needed that kind of support, we'd be here.

Charter school, preferably. But if he doesn't get in, then public.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Probably public. We plan on structuring our next home purchase - move on the school district.
The nice private schools in this area that I would want to send her to cost about $28k per year. LOL. And that's not including mandatory uniforms or laptop

Public. We live in a good school district. And I think public education in general has a lot of issues (primarily the focus on testing) which is frustrating. But I hope that with a reasoned approach to education at home it will be fine. And honestly its the only real option for us because private is too expensive and I just really don't want to homeschool.

Public, we choose home based on school rankings. If one is extremely gifted we will think about private school but tuition for private school is $30k a year per child.

Public. We are very lucky to be able to live in a town with excellent schools, and we moved here for that reason. I wish it didn't have to be this way. It is incredibly sad to me that so many people do not have that choice - your zip code and income determine what choice, if any, you have in ensuring a strong education for your kids.

Homeschooling for as long as it works for us all. Probably public school if we decide to stop.

Public school, unless one of us works at a private school with free tuition for children of staff.

Public unless an amazing charter opened up (ones near us are aweful).

Public.
I grew up in a public school district that couldn't meet my needs and I saw how much money my parents had to spend on private school. I am adamant about making sure that we are in good public school districts so that we can send our kids to public school.
