Most likely public school. The only other one I would consider is a Friends school but currently there aren't any near us.

K-8 isn't great where we're building. Highschool's ranked #7 or something in the state though.
We're sending our kids to private school.
I went to public and DH went to private.

I think we'll start with public and then go private at some point when they are older. Like around 5th grade?

98% sure public. There's a Jewish school that I would think about, and there's a charter school that specializes in the arts that sounds pretty amazing. But we have a great public school right down the street, walking distance.

Catholic school, which makes a little easier when it comes time for us to buy a house since we won't have to really factor in the quality of the local public schools.

I'm a public school teacher and our kids will go to public, but I really don't like the high stakes testing culture in public school. It wasn't like that when I went to school.

We're unsure at this point. I'm hoping we could afford to start with Montessori for preschool and kindergarten.

Unsure. He will do Montessori through kindergarten. Then we live next door to the local public school so that is an option. Or possibly the Charter school. He won't go to public middle school so either the Charter school or home schooled. Then probably public high school unless he was home schooled and would prefer that while getting his AA.

Catholic school. We'll apply for both our parish school and the cathedral school next year for DD. The cathedral school is our first choice, though, because they have an amazing music program!

@Honeybee: you're in SLC, right? Gah the cathedral children's choir KILLS me....they're so good!!!!
We will probably send them to pubic schools, though there is a chance we may move abroad, in which case we'd send them to private, international school.

The school that I teach at - public school, French Immersion program.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@brownie: this is our story exactly. Montessori through K. The local public school is a block away and highly ranked, so we will consider that through 5th, but we want to continue our Spanish immersion. We definitely won't go public for Junior High here!
@Honeybee: Well that puts the cathedral school on our list!
Edited to add that I keep salivating over the money we would save if our kids went public for first through fifth!

I plan to send my son to public school at least for elementary school. Part of the reason we bought the home we did is that it is literally down the street and I can stand in the front yard and watch my son walk there.
I am a big believer in public school, I truley believe everyone should send their children if they can, it only serves to raise the quality for all children.

@MediaNaranja: The choir is amazing! Plus they have a pretty rigorous academic program. I'm sold!
@Mrs. Jacks: How much would Lala and DD love to be in school together? Seriously, that would be awesome!
Eta: Ugh the middle schools here scare me. Also, I think high school would be really hard when all the LDS kids are going to Seminary in the mornings and getting ready for marriage/their missions and our kids... aren't. I would actually consider public school for elementary (our school has a Mandarin immersion program, I think) but definitely not for middle or high school.

To answer my own question more indepth. We plan to send her to the local elementary which is just 3 blocks away. We live in a really good school district and it was a major deciding factor in our home purchase.
As for middle/high school I would LOVE for her to go to this school 20 minutes away. It's technically in another district and you have to test into it. Last year it was top FIVE high schools in the nation according to US News!!! I hope by the time M is of age other kids in other districts can test for it as well.

We will send him to private school through kindergarten. If he tests into private school, we will send him there, otherwise, public school. We choose our house based on the fact it was in a very good school district.

@regberadaisy: our district junior high is super scary and the other choice is equally bad!
@honeybee: it would be amazing. I haven't looked into their language programs, though. That would be a big factor for us.

if money were no object, either the private independent school i went to or the friends school.... but these are the tuitions for those & that's just not gonna happen for us. we'd need some serious financial aid. i might apply to the one i went to when the time comes and see what, if any, aid we could get & then decide if we could make it work even for a few years. realistically though, they'll probably end up in public school. i have mixed feelings about it, but we're looking to buy & only considering places with excellent public schools.

They just started a Chinese immersion school in a neighboring city, we plan to send LO there.
pomelo / 5178 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: My understanding is that they do Spanish K-8, Latin 4-8N and can choose to also do French 6-8, but I'm pretty sure they do not have an immersion program.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@Honeybee: I guess we'll have to see what the girls are interested in that time. I can tell you right now that based on genetics, Lala won't be a choir girl!

Public school.
Our public schools are better than our private schools.

I'm pretty committed to sending our kids to public school, so the local schools will be a major factor of choosing where we buy a house.

@MrsTiz: REALLY!??!?!?! The private schools down there aren't so great?

Public until we see a need to go private. If we see a need, that is!
ETA: there are some really fantastic private high schools in our state and around the area, so I would love to send my kids to those if they are admitted.

@mediagirl: I think there is only one that isn't religious... I hung out with people from just about every school in our town, including private school kids, and I can say wholeheartedly that every girl I knew from private schools were the biggest slutbags EVER and about 1/3 of them work at Hooters now (seriously not exaggerating). The girls from public schools were normal rowdy teenagers, don't get me wrong, but if you wanted to see a girl doing a kegstand in a mini skirt and then stripping on the table, you went to a private school party. All the best drugs came from private school boys because they had the money to buy it.
Since all of them are Christian schools that force daily bible study and require you attend weekly church sermons as well as encourage them to be in chorus or other religious groups you see a HUGE backlash. The harder you force religion onto kids/teenagers the harder they rebel when they get the chance.
Naturally I know that isn't the case for most private schools but since these are all religious (with the exception of one) I would never send my LO there. Ever.

we are leaning towards a private christian school as well. But our public school system is great too
bananas / 9899 posts
For elementary school, we will be sending our kids to a private christian school (same one DH went to). For high school we will send them to a regular public school.
