Granite. It came with the house. I don't love it but it's not bad and better than the alternative.

@serendipity: quartz is low maintenance whereas granite is not. But you can technically place hot pots directly in granite whereas you can not do it with quartz. A quartz like caesar stone is actually quite expensive. Choosing the right countertop material is such a big decision!!!!

@dagret: omg. Who in their right mind actually thought that would look good???

We aren't in our 'forever house' and need to keep the costs low, so that we make money on the re-sale value, so our counters are the cheap stuff....I can't even remember what its called. I remember it being a big deal when we were opting to not get any of the fancy stuff, but now I honestly love them.

I either want butcher block counter tops or a white marble/granite

@Mrs. Jacks: I'm swooning over your butcher block!
My countertops are wood. I plan on renovating/extending our kitchen, but I haven't figured out what I want yet, but I haven't really looked. I don't really like granite.

We have granite - pretty rare in a rental round here. I do like the stone surface for food prep so it would be something we consider when we purchase a new place.

@Crumbs: ditto, not a fan of granite which is why we're going with soapstone. Same properties, less maintenance.

It's currently laminae and it's absolutely horrid! We're about renovate our kitchen here in a couple weeks and we'll be putting in granite.

@MamaMoose: how are you liking the poured concrete? Has it held up? Did you DIY or hire someone?
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@regberadaisy: we love them. You can see in the pic that they sort of get a "patina" over time but I like the way it looks. The guy we bought the house from was a carpenter and he redid the whole kitchen himself.

We have laminate currently. I don't hate it, it's all I've ever had. In the future I'd love to have butcher block or solid surface.

@MamaMoose: @LindsayInNYC: I'm loving the poured concrete look! I wonder what the cost difference is, I'd assume it's cheaper than things like granite.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@Bookworm: definitely cheaper if you DIY but I think the labor costs are high if you have a pro do it because they have to build the molds, pour the concrete, level it, wait for it to set, etc.

@MamaMoose: @LindsayInNYC: do you guys know when it was installed?
How has it held up? Can you put hot pots on it? Does it scratch?
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@regberadaisy: ours has been in since 2005 and so far so good. No scratching. I don't put hot pots on it. I think technically you can but I prefer to use a trivet to be safe. We also coat it once a year. I think the coating is made from beeswax but I don't know for sure. Hubs does it.

@MamaMoose: @Bookworm: I just googled it since we're looking to add a wine fridge in and would need new countertop poured. It does seem labor intensive. Our kitchen is small so I'm hoping it's not terribly bad.

@LindsayInNYC: Yeah, I googled it too It looks like an interesting DIY project though! I don't know if I'd be up for it, but yeah, it seems like it can be just as expensive as granite if you pay someone! Darn!

@MamaMoose: @regberadaisy: If I had to guess, I think ours was installed in 2006 or 2007? Total guess though. It's been rented the last couple years but is still in good shape. I'll have to check out maintenance for it... Never knew about the beeswax stuff!

@LindsayInNYC: @MamaMoose: waiting on a quote! Will have to see how it compares to soapstone & quartz.
@Bookworm: shoot me a message if you want to know what quote I get as compared to the other materials we've been looking at.

@regberadaisy: Id love to know what the quote is! We're going to need to have a new area poured and I have no clue how much to expect!

Reviving this old thread!
@LindsayInNY: @MamaMoose: I'm curious to know how your poured concrete countertops have held up over the years.

laminate in our rental, will have Silestone in our new construction (picked it out earlier this week!)

We have laminate (we rent). But when we do get a house, we'll steer away from natural stone and their porous and maintenance aspects. Perhaps quartz or just a nicer looking laminate for us. My mother's one regret about her new kitchen island was the granite top seam that is slowly separating and has to be redone occasionally.
Maybe I'm weird, but I like to see if my counters are really clean and granite and natural stone patterns really camouflage that
