If your LO is or will be in after school, what type of program is it?
LO's in preschool so after school right now is just more outside time and free play--nothing structured. Next year she'll be in pre-k so we're looking into after school programs. She wants to play guitar and we want her to learn Spanish so it's between guitar classes or a Spanish language immersion program.

Next year when she goes to K she will just do school after care which is half structured (snack and homework) and half free play

I SAH but if I go back to work after LO is in school, we will have a babysitter. After reading about the Bees' experience with after school programs, I really feel like it is overstimulating for younger kids!

Ds goes to after school and he loves it! He is in 1st grade this year
They get a snack and milk when they 1st arrive and then they can choose where to go - homework station, computers, gym, arts and crafts, games, etc.
twice a month they make a special snack - apple turnovers was this month
I never have him do his homework - I actually prefer that he run around and play and get his energy out and then once home we do his homework

They very likely will be. I imagine It'll be a snack, play time, help with homework environment.
@Mamaof2: what time do you get home? We get home at 5 now and I can't imagine having enough time to help them with homework! I imagine when she starts school bedtime will get moved up as well.

@regberadaisy: I pick him up at 5- 5:15 and it takes us 10 mins to get home - he does his homework while I make dinner - it takes him 5 mins (no joke) to complete- he doesn't need help -
Once he gets older and homework takes longer I might encourage him to do some of it at aftercare

@honeybear: Some in K but since its an elementary school they offer homework time for all kids. They can just sit and read or whatever if they want. I think its only a few minutes required (10-15) and then kids can stay if they have more work or go outside to play if they want to.

In 1st grade its 4 days a week

probably not after care, because school gets out at 4pm and Dh and I are both off by then, but they will go to before school care, probably at the place E goes to now. It's just free play.

Oh and you can add extras like Young Rembrandts, Science Explorers, or Language Class - its 1 day a week but costs extra $$
Last semester DS did the science explorers - he liked it but said he prefers free play after school

I don't know yet. I hope my son shows some specific interests and we would want to leverage that, rather than just more time at his school, with the same staff and kids.

There's a program at her elementary school run by the YMCA so we're planning to do that. I'm more comfortable with her staying at school than being shuttled around to a different facility.

@lawbee11: yeah. That's what I'm weighing right now. Do I want her to be commuting to another location? But then again not sure I want her to be at her school the entire time. Right now I'm exploring school afterschool program with maybe 1 or 2 days of another program. It would be great if her school had language immersion or music lessons in the building.
