I was looking forward to the bonding aspect of it!
I was looking forward to the bonding aspect of it!

Honestly? I didn't want to pay for formula if I didn't have to. Then the health benefits for both of us, then the bonding.

I want to try to breastfeed because from all the research I've done (and believe me I've obsessed about this topic for weeks on end!) I really, truly believe breastmilk the best thing for my baby. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of her getting diabetes, asthma, allergies, eczema - not to mention all those anti-bodies protecting her from illness.

Health benefits, convenience, it is cheaper and bonding.

I believe it's the standard (not best) and is what my bebe deserves... & think of formula as any other medical intervention, it should be used sparingly & appropriately only when medically necessary.

The health benefits are number one, especially the immune benefits. Second is the convenience factor (once you get through the hard part in the beginning, I hope), then the cost and the bonding.
@runsyellowlites: I think that's a really good way to put it!

In this order:
-Health benefits for her (immune benefits, lower allergy risk, etc.)
-Health benefits for me (lower breast cancer risk, weight loss)
-Bonding
-To distinguish me from other caregivers (e.g., at daycare)
-Saving money
-Convenience

Antibodies is the number one reason. I want to hold off that first sickness as long as possible. Then convenience, weight loss and cost. For some reason, bonding isn't on my list at all - maybe because it's not the only way to bond?

Health benefits, bonding, and expense. I did it as long as it was sustainable for the both of us.
nectarine / 2771 posts
health benefits, bonding experience, cost, and then convenience - in that order.

Main reason I wanted to at the beginning? Probably a tie between cost, health benefits (to me and to X), and the fact that I'd be able to control what went into his body better than I could if he was formula fed. I liked that he was eating organic in the truest sense.
Why we continued? cost, convenience, and yes-- the fact that while breastfeeding I could eat 2 slices of cake without guilt. It's no coincidence that I gained 5 lbs the week X weaned...

@Grace: I totally agree! bonding wasn't high on my list either because I never felt (and still don't feel) that breastfeeding was only or even the best way to bond with babies. I don't think I'd feel less bonded to X if we hadn't breastfed.

@Grace: @red_seattle: Thank you! I get really annoyed when people say that breastfeeding is how mamas bond with their babies. As if my baby is less bonded to me because I don't breastfeed. It might be how they bond with their babies, but there are so many other ways to connect with your little one!
My original plan was to breastfeed at home & supplement when out or when Sadie was with a sitter. The only reason I was planning on breastfeeding was the cost factor.

1. Convenience and cost
2. Health benefits
3. Bonding (not that I couldn't otherwise, but I really love that only I can give that experience to him)
4. If I'm being honest, the ability to be a martyr and be all, "Oh look at me, I breastfeed" is partially why I slogged through it in the early bad days

Mainly because the hubby introduced the idea to me and he really wanted me to do it. My brother, myself, and all my cousins were all formula fed so I had no idea about breastfeeding. Plus, the assistance in weight loss sounds awesome apart from the health benefits, costs savings over formula, and that special bond.

Initially for the immunity and nutrition, LO was born five weeks early-that got me through the beginning with our latching problems and exclusively pumping.
Convenience and bonding are why I continue.

Because I really believe breast is best, if/when possible. Also, to be honest, because of cost and the potential help it could lend to weight loss!
Now that I'm doing it though it's about bonding, convenience and how rewarding it is to know that my baby is growing because of me.

Bonding, convenience, and because that what our breasts are meant for, biologically...I was also told by a genetic counselor that breastfeeding would reduce my chance of developing breast cancer.
After he was born, I also liked the fact that I could be possessive of him when I wanted to and no one could argue

I didn't want to pay money for something I could make myself. I wanted the special relationship. It's a family tradition - we're big breastfeeders/natural birthers.

Honestly I breastfeed because it was free. That was a huge factor for me.

I want to do it for the cost savings, the convenience and the health/emotional factors. We'll see how it turns out but I'm hoping we're successful!
