I am going to try to make sure one of us can drop her off at school and the other can pick her up. I don't want her to have to go to after school care because she will already have to go to "camp" when she is tracked out. Boo. 
What will you do when your lo goes to school? Will one of you stay home so you can be there with them when school is out? Will you send them to after school care and track out camp? Summer camp?

I think one of us will do drop off, maybe alternate since it's SO close. Hopefully the ILs will be up to picking her up and watching her till we get out of work. It'll only be for about 2.5 hours I think.
In an ideal world I would love to pick her up!
But I agree, I wouldn't want to send her to a after school program if I can help it. At least not until she's much older if she needs the help with homework.

Hopefully, by then I'll work in the same school district my LO goes to, so our schedules will coordinate.

I teach 2nd grade so LO will go to the school that I work at. I'll bring them to school with me and then my mom will pick them up at the end of the day for an hour or so until I get home.

It is for this reason that I would like to stay at home again once my son goes to school. I would use the time during the day to volunteer at the school and be there for pick up/drop off.

What's track out?
I have always been a latchkey kid so I have horrible memories of always begging other people for rides home if I missed the bus (I was painfully shy, too) and walking home over 3 miles on a major highway, many many many times. It's my goal to be able to pick my kids up every day after school, or have a part time nanny who picks them up.

I'm working on arranging my schedule to dial down my hours for being able to pick up DD at 3pm. But the school also has an after school activity program that is available too so we would probably use that for long days at work and there's always the grandparents.

We'll probably have to send our kids to an after school program, or an afternoon babysitter (which is what I did). Then after a few years they'll probably be trusted to be home alone, maybe around 5th grade like I was.

We love our daycare lady and she does afterschool pickups for other kids. In an ideal world, instead of watching A all day, she would pick her up from school and watch her until one of us was off of work (only 1-2 hours).

I went to after school care and I was fine (although I didn't love it LOL)
The daycare we send her to does early drop off (if necessary) and then after school care as well...so if we are still in the area we will probably just utilize that.

My plan is to work from home, so i can at least pick her up and be home. I may not be able to play with her after i pick her up (i'll have to go back to work in the office) but at least i'll be home.

Ideally, we'll be in a situation where one of us can do pick-up (more likely me than DH). But if not, we may have my parents help, or a babysitter for just those few hours in the afternoon. I wouldn't want to use after-school care, or have our child be a "latchkey kid."

@wheres_c: @mrs. wagon: track out is when they are not in school. In our area, most of the schools are year round. Track out is what they call the times when kids are not in school.

@mrs. wagon: year round school? I think so. They were moving towards it in MD when I left and it's the thing here. Do your kids have a traditional calendar?
Also, I don't know what the F we are going to do during those breaks. I dread, DREAD her going to Elementary school and having to deal with it.

I have no idea. I work 30 minutes away from where we live, and DH works all sorts of hours but typically afternoons/evenings. I know a lot can change in 5 years but I am already stressed out about this lol.

DD is starting kinder and I think I'll probably stay home for at least another two years at this point. Perhaps when all kids are in school and have some after-school activities, I can go back to work part-time. But for now, I love doing all the drop-offs, pick-ups and helping with homework.

Well DH is a teacher so the summers and breaks are not an issue for us. I plan to drop her off in the mornings and then she can do after school until DH arrives to pick her up. It will take him 30 mins at the most so I'm sure she will be fine.

None of the schools in our area are year-round. As a teacher and now a new parent, I think year-round school is for the birds.
Our son is far from school, but we've got so many different combination options I can't even begin to make a plan. We could
- send him to our neighborhood school
- try to choice him into the school near the daycare he attends now
- come to the school where I teach (btw, my least favorite option)
- go to another school closer to our home, but in the district where I teach (I don't teach in our neighborhood district).
- not even live in our city anymore!
We do a combo drop off/pick up now, but I don't know about when school starts. I think I heard that buses could bring him to/from my school? All we know is that we'll have summer care covered!

DH and I both have some flexibility to our schedules, and my retired parents live about 30 minutes from where we'll probably be living when our kids start public school, so I imagine that I'll go into work super early or work from home a couple days a week and then be there when they get home, my DH will do the same a couple days, and my parents will take a day.

I don't know! I was thinking about this the other day and it stressed me out. L is 3 months old.
We don't have full day kindergarten so I guess we'd need half day care all year? There's really only 1 acceptable daycare around here (his current daycare is in a different school district) that provides transportation to/from school.

Hopefully, I'll still be able to work from home for my position, so I plan on doing the AM drop off (school starts at 8:15a) and afternoon pick up. Our district has early release on Wednesdays, so LO will be home a little after 12p on those days. My mom will be here to watch her after school.
But a lot can change in 5 years!

I will definitely be picking up because ill be a SAHM and who drops off will depend on DH's work schedule at the time. Right now he leaves for work at 9:30 so if he still has this schedule he'll probably want to drop him off.

i have no clue because DD is 4 months and who knows where we will even be living when she goes to school, but i do know that i went to after-school care at the place where we went to day camp during the summer and i loved it. 
but hopefully i'll be a WAHM, so i can co-ordinate transportation. we also ALWAYS did carpools when i was a kid, so we'll probably try to organize one of those too.
