Some friends have told me that I should wait 'til after L&D to buy the pump; in case there are BF issues.
Also if we bought at the hospital, there's an outside chance that our insurance may cover part or all of the cost...

I rented mine through the hospital b/c my milk wasn't coming in. I never bought a pump since the hospital grade one worked so well. It ended up being really cheap, too... I paid $8/month!

No its best to have your pump in advance. I bought my pump a few months before my due date. I am very glad I did that because I got to pump as soon as i got home from the hospital and I think pumping regularly helped build up my supply.
I ordered mine online from amazon. I bought the Lansinoh double affinity electric pump and I am so happy with it.

My insurance covered a pump rental with a prescription from my OB. I pay $8/month for the rental of the same one I used at the hospital. The nurses at my OB's office arranged for it to be delivered to our home the same afternoon we were discharged. It was wonderful.
ETA: I did buy a $20 single hand pump prior to delivery, which is actually really nice to have for the car

I just called my insurance - they cover a pump purchase 100% if I buy from a local direct medical shop. So.. I'll be buying mine next week! So maybe call and clarify what exactly they'll pay for? I didn't want to worry about researching options, etc. and coping with a newborn.

I rented for the first month through an independent rental company. I bought my pump about 3 weeks after he was born through Hygeia since things were working out well with bf and pumping. Love my pump, works better for me than the hospital grade Ameda rental.

With DD #2 I rented a pump for about a month to make sure that breastfeeding was going to work out before I bought.
I think got a pump on Craigslist and used all my supplies I had to buy to use the rental. This time I got a Freestyle off of Craiglist.
I would have something lined up before you leave the hospital. It would suck to have a problem and have no pump available. I saw a mom sitting in the pump isle in Target the other night with a newborn. She was having problems feeding and had to just go get a pump while she was engorged, just to get her through until the morning.

Renting a pump. There would have been no need to buy one beforehand for us.

Bought mine at Burlington Coat Factory because it was Hella cheaper than anywhere else I'd ever seen it. I got a Medela Freestyle for under $300

@MerryC: Same here - they delivered the pump to my door like 3 hours after my OB ordered it. It was awesome! Plus, when the tubing broke, they delivered another set to my door that day, free of charge.
Another reason I didn't buy a pump beforehand was b/c I wasn't sure how breast feeding would turn out. When I was having tons of trouble in the beginning and almost had to quit, I was really glad I hadn't bought a pump that I couldn't return. So that's one more thing to consider

I got a hand pump from the hospital. They just added it to the bill so insurance would over it (they charged $93 though which is outrageous). Recently, my MIL bought me a swing so I could up my pumping a little. She went through the hospital so she could get a discount.

We rented one from the hospital for 10 days and when I became super comfortable with it and breastfeeding became easier, we bought our own.

Husband's work has a program that will give you a discount on medela pumps, like $150 plus free access to a lactation consultant for 6 months after you give birth. So we went thru that.

I think I got mine ... on Ebay? At around 6 months pregnant.

We got the Freestyle from Babies R Us a few weeks ago, purely because it was on sale and we were about to lose our benefits so we thought we'd get insurance to pay for it while we could : )

I think it was about 5 days postpartum, when LO was having trouble latching and I wanted to make sure we gave BF every chance possible. I had my FIL get it at Target (Medela PISA).

I bought a manual pump at 4 days post partum when I was so engorged on one side LO couldn't latch. Bought the electric pump at about a month. My supply was fine before then so I had no reason to pump regularly. I only bought it then because I had some good coupons to stack together, and I really didn't use it too much until I went back to work last week.

I registered for an Ameda double electric and didn't think anyone would buy it. A few of my friends made a group purchase and gave it to me before my baby shower! I used it soooo much this year....well over a 1000 times!

I registered for the medela pump and it was the first shower gift we received!

I got it on amazon about a month before LO was due. I wanted to have it on hand but was worried about not being able to return it if something went wrong, so I didn't open it until after delivery. There is a sterile/hygienic seal-thing on the box, and my understanding was it could be returned as long as that was still intact. LO had trouble latching so I was very glad to have it right away!

We bought one through my Hubs lactation program at work - but it didn't ship until one month before my due date and my son was almost 6 weeks early. So I also had to rent one from the hospital - it was $80 a month for the Symphony I think? Hubs work paid part other one (we paid like $160) which was a Freestyle.

We're waiting on buying ours. I have a manual handpump that I'll use then we'll rent from the hospital if we need to. The baby is due in November, but I think the breast pump coverage for us won't kick off until the plan renews in January so we're going to try to make due for two months until we can get a free one through insurance. Plus, that way we'll know whether breastfeeding is going to work for us. Breast pumps are expensive and hard to resell!

I'm waiting until after I give birth, I need to hit my deductible for insurance to cover the whole thing. I have a supply store I have to use in order to be covered, DH will have to go pick it up when we get home from the hosptial.

I bought the manual Lansinoh pump before giving birth, then ended up buying the electric one about a month after he was born. Insurance is supposed to cover pumps now, but you have to get a prescription and then get it from a medical supply store.

Bought the Medela Pump In Style at Babies r us. I bought it and kept the receipt in case I needed to return it. I didn't open it until I absolutely needed to use it. And it was nice having it just in case I needed it asap (which I did)
