I bought some organic hotdogs and want to give LO some!! He is just over 7 months. When did you give hotdogs? Should I mash them, or give it whole??

Lala hasn't had a hot dog yet. I would break it up into teensiest pieces because a hot dog is a pretty big choking hazard.

I haven't given LO a hot dog yet but I heard that they should be cut in half lengthwise to reduce risk of choking.

DD hasn't had a hot dog, but she's had some turkey sausage. I think she first tried it (by licking it) around 20 months. She didn't actually eat (like chew and swallow) until... 24+ months.
ETA: Turkey sausage like a turkey kielbasa, not like breakfast sausage.

charlie didn't have one until he was over 2. he loves them, but i don't like giving them often even if they are organic and nitrate free!

@Mrs. Bee: Any reason why? I got the Organic grass-fed beef hotdog. I do give DS grass-fed beef so I guess I see no difference?

@Coco Bee: For us, we feel they are too high in fat and high in sodium to give to little kids. The following reviews share some of the nutritional information. Also most hot dogs contain nitrites that I'd rather not expose my kids to...

But lots of kiddos eat them, I'm not judging what's right for others, just sharing why we avoid them

I gave DS hotdog for the first time when he was 11 or 12 months old. We also bought organic and cut them length wise before cutting them into even smaller pieces. To be honest, they were kind of greasy and he didn't really care for them. We tried them twice and he hardly even ate it.

I won't give them to DS because they're a choking hazard (he's 3.5). I even read about someone trying to change hot dogs to have several holes in them because children choke on them so often (think of those wheel shaped noodles).

@Coco Bee: even when organic and nitrate-free, they're processed meat with sodium as opposed to fresh chicken, beef, fish. but charlie does love them! i cut them four ways lengthwise.

My son is 2 1/2 and he's never had a hot dog! My DH and I aren't big hot dog eaters/lovers. But we do love burgers!

Ill be the odd man out..... my lo is 14 months and she eats hot dogs!
She probably had her first hot dog when she was over a year old. She's not a big meat eater so I buy organic turkey dogs. I know its not the best for you..... but she love love loves them and its nice to get some meat in her. I cut them up teeny tiny because ive also heard bad things about choking.

Not until he was 3. He doesn't care for it and I'm totally okay with that b/c it's too salty. The couple of times he ate it he kept asking for water afterwards. I felt so bad that I stopped giving it to him. Plus, he's not a big meat eater to begin with. Me, on the other hand, LOVE hot dogs but don't eat it often.

I feel like I came out of the womb eating macaroni and hot dogs.

my pediatrician suggested not giving babies any food that resembles "fast food" til after their 3rd year....
no hot dogs. no macaroni and cheese. no chips. no french fries.no juice....etc.....I have the whole list that she gave me, but basically its just commen sense.
on the other hand, I don't see anything wrong with hot dogs if they're 100% beef....Breanna used to eat them all the time...we just cut them up into tiny little baby bite sized pieces....if Cobi can eat the egg and banana pancakes I think he can eat the hotdog....:)

DD is 2.5 and hasn't had a hot dog but it should be fine if you cut it up small.

I don't remember, but we gave breakfast sausages (made by a local butcher, so no worrysome ingredients) at a pretty young age. Cut in half lengthwise to avoid that perfect choking shape.
