I think we gave blankets at night around 1 year but I did cut a swaddle into 4 squares and used that as a lovey for DD at probably 4-5 months. I wasn't concerned about suffocation with a swaddle since they are so breathable but I was afraid a full sized one could get wrapped around her head/neck if she rolled too much.

Exactly what @creativemomma15: said. I was afraid she would get it wrapped around her neck somehow. We also got the little A&A security blankets, which she liked for a few months until we gave her an angel dear lovey. Didn't start wth real blankets until after a year when she did get attached to the full size swaddle blankets.

Now at 2.5 she sleeps with ALL the blankets.

DS started sleeping with them around 4 months. He needed something to occupy his hands and it helped him fall asleep. He was rolling both ways and usually sleeps with a thumb in his mouth anyway.

We did the same as above and cut a swaddle in 4 pieces for my son when he was a few months old, maybe around 8 mos? Then within a couple of days walked in to find it wrapped around his face. Yes, he could breathe through it, but it was still super scary and that was the end of those little blanket pieces.

@wrkbrk: I hemmed the cut edges. I actually folded the pieces to be smaller first so they are about 10 inches square & then sewed around the edges.

From probably 3 or 4 months. LO was not a roller until about 7months. So I didn't worry about it wrapping around his neck. Always the A&A swaddle blankets.

He also has some wabbanubs and a small rubber ducky to chew on as he falls asleep.

I know we are breaking all sorts of rules but ... sleep...

@regberadaisy: maybe I square foot? Small, meant for snuggling, definitely not for putting over for warmth.
