The internet is just full of conflicting advice about solids!
So far we've steamed everything, but I was wondering when we can start using butter. Also oil, is it best to use olive or vegetable, and when?
You guys are my solids gurus : )

From the beginning, really. She had buttered toast sticks fairly early on, and we gave her things like roasted veggies too.

Around 6-7 months for olive oil and held off on butter til around 10 months since he had a dairy intolerance.

@winniebee: We have tons of dairy intolerances in our family so am a bit worried about that... so far she hasn't had any dairy but my sister and me were both intolerant and my niece and cousin were both so, so ill with dairy it was pretty scary.

@travelgirl1: do you breast feed? If so do you consume dairy? if you answered yes to both of these questions there's a good chance your baby is not dairy intolerant. If you suspect an intolerance than you could start with dairy baked in stuff then cheese then yogurt.

From day 1. I sautee her veggies instead of steaming so I cook them in either olive oil, butter or both. I prefer butter because it's heavier calorie and I (probably completely unnecessarily) worry she won't get enough calories on solids.

@winniebee: Yes to both. She used to have very odd poops and I was convinced that was down to dairy issues, but they've been normal for a while now.

Pretty much from the beginning but I have to admit I use far more olive oil in cooking than butter. He doesn't seem to have a preference.

Starting at 6 months...the very beginning. We did BLW and didn't really hold back from what we usually ate.

When we started solids! Toast w/ some earth balance spread (dairy & soy free due to her intolerances) was about the only thing I could get her to eat FOREVER!

Probably around 9 months when he wasn't eating basic purees anymore. He started eating mashed up versions of whatever I cooked, so almost everything was fair game. We didn't have any allergy problems so I wasn't worried.
