When did dairy intolerance symptoms appear? Do you think you would have noticed earlier, if you had been less sleep-deprived / busy as a new mama?
*specifically wondering especially about mucousy diapers since that's (currently) all we're dealing with.

We started to realize that her crazy spit up was more than normal after 3-4 weeks, but her ped told us it was reflux and put her on Zantac. After a few weeks of that not helping much we noticed that diapers were mucous-y (sometime with specs of blood) and her nose was always a bit stuffy. All in all it took us until she was about 3.5 months to get it all figured out and eliminate dairy from my diet.
ETA: I think we would have noticed a bit earlier, but I wasn't even really aware of what MSPI was until I followed my gut instinct that it was more than reflux and started doing some research.

I'm currently wondering if my new LO (4 weeks) is dairy intolerant. LO1 was dairy intolerant and we were so clueless we didn't realize anything was wrong for a few months.

Green mucous poops with blood streaks at 6 weeks after rotavirus vax - confirmes by paed at 13 weeks. He asked me not to eliminate dairy though as he wants baby to get used to some dairy slowly as she grows.

He was about 8 weeks when the mucus diapers started. He's now 15 weeks and we're still trying to sort out all his intolerances

@FannyMae: interesting, so at what point do you think the dr would be worried?? How often does LO have green mucous poops, and how often are the blood streaks? My dr wants me to eliminate all dairy, nuts, and eggs based on 2-3 days of green mucusy poops, with no blood and no other symptoms.

@DesertDreams88: I asked him the same questions - I'll break it down like this
- The only dairy I eat is a dash of milk in my tea x 3 per day, butter/margarine on my toast every morning and her poops are totally fine.
- If I have a larger amount of dairy (parmesan cheese on pasta/a slice of cheese in sandwich/some feta etc) her poop might go green/mucousy for one or two poops.
- If I have a large amount of dairy or some chocolate (bowl of ice cream, lots of cream cheese, butter in my rice etc) her poop will go nasty green/mucous and have some blood streaks in it. She might be unsettled with her sleep at this point, and her nose might get blocked up causing her eye to go sticky.
She might have a blood poop once a fortnight if I overdo it. He said if she starts having blood poops more often, like every few days, and is unsettled then I need to go see him again. He thinks she has a mild case, and seems to tolerate small amounts in my breastmilk fine. He is also an allergy specialist and said he prefers that she has this early exposure through my milk before she has to get onto solids herself. She is growing quickly and is in high percentiles, and would like me to start her on solids from 4 months, introducing chese and yoghurt by 6 months. I think he prefers to early exposure rather than complete restriction so that she doesn't have a complete allergic reaction later.

It was around 6 or 7 weeks that I was pretty certain. I had suspected something was wrong for several weeks but at first, I thought it was foremilk/hindmilk imbalance (I had oversupply for sure, so it seemed logical to me). After a few weeks of trying to reduce my supply and seeing no change, I cut out dairy. After a week of that, DH and I decided to let me have dairy again since we didn't think it had made a difference. I probably overdid it with the dairy that day (I had way more than I normally would because I had missed it), and the next day, LO screamed the whole day and that night, she had blood in her diaper for the first time. I felt awful for eating too much dairy, but at least it was pretty convincing to me at that point.

8 weeks I think. After several days of green, super mucousy blowouts, we went to the ped who initially assumed it just a stomach bug. When it didn't resolve within a week (so 10 days in a row of mucous poops), her ped suspected a dairy issue and asked us to try Alimentum. Once we got on Alimentum, we saw an immediate improvement.
Eta: Lo1 was mostly formula fed from the beginning so I didn't have to deal with cutting anything out.

My DD's tolerance level was pretty much the same as @FannyMae described. We had her tongue tie diagnosed and clipped at 5 weeks, and when her nursing improved but diapers and spitting up didn't, I figured I'd try to cut out as much dairy as I could to see what happened. It definitely helped, so I felt fine about eating small amounts because they didn't bother her, but avoided eating larger amounts. It was more about the reflux for us than the diapers, though.

LO1 we noticed around 2 months. His sleeping had been terrible since birth and would kick his legs in the air to pass gas all night long, waking himself. He wouldn't sleep longer than 30 minutes. We discussed it at his 2 month appointment and the ped asked about mucusy diapers which I think he was having but we didn't realize. He was particularly bad after I ate a cheese heavy dinner one night and some tofu another night and we finally put two and two together. I think he was maybe 10 weeks.
With LO2 we kind of knew what to look out for and his poop turned bright green. I brought it up at his one month appointment and the ped kind of dismissed it. I also had oversupply so we didn't know if that was the cause. Within a week or 2 there were streaks of blood and his sleep went to crap. We saw a different ped who agreed we should cut the dairy and soy. That was probably around 6 weeks.

We had less than a week of normal, seedy poop. It remained mucousy the entire time she was EBF, despite my cutting out dairy and eggs and some other foods. She was still sensitive to dairy and eggs after starting solids, but now at 18 months has passed food challenges for both and can eat anything. I definitely did not think that would happen this early when we were having mucousy, bloody poops four months on end!

At 3 weeks old he was having bloody mucousy diapers. He's been on alumentum since then.

Poop turned mucousy and very fussy eating started around 4 weeks. Blood in stool around 8 weeks.

@DesertDreams88: 3-4 weeks was awful projectile vomiting and screaming after feeds. 4-5 weeks was green and mucousy diapers (not always green). 6 weeks we started Prevacid for reflux and cut all dairy per the ped's recommendation by 7 weeks. Less than a month later, his symptoms were 99% better

We noticed around 3-4 weeks. His pediatrician kept telling us it was just reflux, for months on end, even when I asked about a possible dairy intolerance. I regret not listening to my gut sooner. I started eliminating dairy, and then soy, when he was 5 months and the difference was astounding.

5 weeks- noticed mucousy diapers, bad/painful gas. 7/8ish weeks blood in stool.

It was like a switch at 8 weeks: mucous in the diapers; screaming all day, every day; tons of congestion; and vomiting like Mt. Vesuvius. She never had weight issues.
The only thing that came earlier was the profuse, profuse spit-up. She always went through several outfits a day, as did I. I think that in some babies, it takes a while for there to be an amount in their system that irritates them.

My kid just stopped eating at 10 weeks. Like... refused all bottles. ALL BOTTLES. It was not a normal reaction to MSPI, but the doc said that most likely eating was making her stomach hurt so she just didn't want to do it anymore. Once we got her on nutramigen she started eating again within about 4 days.

I think it was about his 2 month check-up that I asked our pediatrician about it. He'd had mucusey bms since he was 2 or 3 weeks, but they weren't green. However, they became consistently green and so I reduced, but didn't eliminate, dairy. He still had mucus in his stools & spit-up, but he was a "happy spitter" and never had blood in his stools. I probably could have eliminated everything, but that was too drastic for me when he seemed happy. He's 3.5 years now and totally happy/healthy & a dairy eater. (I'm cutting out way more dairy for my daughter though, because she does not seem happy. I was on the lookout for dairy issues right away for her and I think I could eliminate if she had bloody bms)

Poops were explosive and mucusy from day 1.. Our main symptom was horrific reflux- like hospitalizations/at the ER bc our ped thought he aspirated, sitting up all night watching him bc I was afraid he would choke from all the vomit, etc.
After minimal improvement on Zantac and Prevacid, his GI had me go on an elimination diet at 4 wks which made a huge difference.
We are still struggling with really bad reflux, but not to the point of being in the ER. We still fought mucus and blood in the poops until December when I went on a total elimination diet (only ate turkey, sweet potato, zucchini, and pear for 2 weeks). Then I introduced foods back in 1 at a time.
