Just curious when you started using baby sign language? DD is 10 weeks old today and her grandma just sent us a book on it. I have never signed before but would like to try some simple ones eventually. I am just not sure when to start.

I think I started around 6 months old. LO can sign a few things. I didn't push sign language on her though.

I never did it... but find it really interesting.
Clearly I know nothing about the topic though, so I'm no help.

I started a 6 months because that's when we started feeding solids and it just came natually to ask her if she wants to "eat" or have "more" or "drink" water... Those are our most common signs. I also do the sign for "milk" before nursing here and there. She started responding back a little at 9 months.

DS is 8 months old and we've been signing a few words for the last 2 months. We do "eat," "hungry," "milk," and "no." He thinks "no" is a joke. Every time I sign it, he laughs at me. It's hysterical and it's so hard not to laugh back. Oy vey!

I haven't done it myself, but my sisters both started at 6 months and would use it at feeding times, hoping the repetition would help my nieces catch on (and it did!)

@Sweet T: too cute!
We've been signing milk, finished, more, bath, dog, mom, and dad since around 5 months, although we haven't been super consistent. LO just turned 7 months, and she's just started trying to sign "finished" when she's done eating solids.

i've done it between 4-5 months (with different kids i've cared for).
if you're comfortable with your LO watching television, the signing time videos are fantastic! i think it's much easier to learn signs (as an adult) when you see them done rather than just as a picture with a description in a book. so if it's new to anyone, the videos are a great introduction for adult & LOs (some of the songs are cute too!)

ha. First I started right away (yep, I'm eager) and then after a while I realized that the baby could hardly even see properly yet.

Awesome. : ) I don't want to push her, either. So I guess we will start casually in september with her solids!

charlie picked it up when he learned it in a class at 9 months old. he just signed "more" last night, after not having used it for months which was pretty cool.
you can start around 6 months but we haven't started with olive yet...

I've been showing the basics signs since 3 months, LO is 6 months now. I look forward to seeing if the exposure to signs works as he is much more coordinated with his hands.

@owlmom: similar signs here. Learned one new one, every month from 7 months old. Latest: 13 months elephant, 14 months please, 15 months sorry.
