He had enchiladas (black bean with a spicy sweet potato sauce) around 7-8 months, and jambalaya not long after. Luckily the heat doesn't seem to bother him (sometimes I think he has a higher heat tolerance than me...)

I gave my DD some kimchee (spicy cabbage) at 12 months. It was watered down so it wasn't very spicy but it still had a bit of a kick. She LOVED it.

he's had watered down korean chicken curry and loved it, no issues. he's also had tofu and potatoes that were cooked in a spicy kimchee broth (watered down), and loved that also.
(that's just spicy ethnic foods) he's had ethnic food since 7 or 8 months. he's an equal oppty eater.

We actually only recently started giving LO (almost 18 m) spicy food mainly because DH was uncomfortable with it.
The other day she had a spicy pasta dish and she would whine at every bite, reach for her water then go back for more. LOL.
As for ethnic food she's been eating that her whole life since starting solids. she loves Thai and Chinese and Mexican!

Ethnic food (with more "unusual" flavors), since maybe 9/10 mos? We haven't done spicy food yet because we don't really eat it.

Ethnic foods, since about 7 months (mostly Vietnamese, since that's what I eat a lot)... spicy food, she can't handle a tiny bit of spice yet! Tried Japanese curry, Indian saag paneer, Vietnamese bun bo hue, etc. and she's not a fan. She's 15 months now.

And spicy is obviously relative! I would only give her mildly spicy food not Hot food. Can't wait to start cooking with some heat again!

I gradually introduced spicier food after she was about 14 months. I waited because she had been very prone to diaper rashes and I didnt want to aggravate it

She isn't big on spicy. I gave her some taco meat once and she gagged at it!! We're going to let her grow into liking spicy foods, I guess.

From the start. She loves it. I think that spice tolerance and general tolerance of 'ethnic' or otherwise out of the ordinary foods is established really early.

@sarac: @wheres_c: same! he's had it since his first foods. never had any kind of allergy or reaction to anything (knock on wood!) and we're pretty adventurous eaters. He loves jalapeños and curry and salsa.
Must've been all the nachos I ate when I was pregnant!

From the start. Sometimes if something is too spicy she will chug like 3 cups of water so I know to dial it back a bit next time.

@sarac: I agree. But she obviously had a tummy ache and couldnt sleep so I am not sure where to draw the line

We started fairly early on... Six and half months maybe. Started with jambalaya and has now had most world cuisines.

@locavore_mama: Mine did that with spicy italian sausage. It was hilarious!
I gave her curried coconut noodles at 11 months. It depends on what type of food you typically eat. If your meals are typically free of spices and seasoning, something heavy like indian food may not really be good.
In your case, i don't think it's the spices but probably the cream/milk in the Indian sauces that are the culprit.

She's not into spicy food (even black pepper is too spicy for her!)... but she's had ethnic food since 8-9 months, specifically, Thai, Indian, Chinese, and Korean.

My current boss ate a ton of spicy food during her pregnancy/ when she breast fed and started feeding it to the baby as soon as they started BLW. The baby LOVES spicy food. One time I accidentally ordered spicy fries and my mouth was on fire, but the baby gobbled them up!

I started feeding it to my LO really early. My thinking is that babies in India, Korea, China, etc. must eat the foods from their countries, so it's not like babies aren't able to eat spicy/rich foods. I basically let him try everything that I eat and if it works for him, then I just let him go at it.

@Freckles makes a good point! It might have been the cream! I try not to give him too much dairy this early, I just fish out the chicken/veggies etc.
Perhaps try some lentils spiced with curry or similar to determine if it was the spice or the dairy.

I feed her lots of ethnic/rich foods but none spicy. She has had sushi, pad Thai, pad see ew, looooves Mexican anything, and miso soup.

Since the beginning. His first non-purée food was yellow squash with curry. Now I make his food with all sorts of spices. He especially loves cumin.

Early on. I think C is a bit adventurous with the food she will try. Spice doesn't bother her. She eats lemons too!
eggplant / 11824 posts
@Mrs. Jump Rope: My LO loves lemons, too. She bites into them like apples, goes right through the rind and pith and everything and eats it all - girlfriend be crazy!
We started on ethic foods very early, as well as spice. LO has never been a fan of very bland food, so I've always seasoned her stuff well, including spice.
We eat a TON of very, very spicy food and I don't feed our level of spice to LO, but she's good with a decent amount of spices.
She likes sushi and loves curry. Also loves salsas.

@yoursilverlining: ha! So glad c isn't the only one.
We took her to her fave restaurant last night for her bday-- a Mexican place. She out-ate me! The little stinker are an entire bowl of guacamole (she calls it her moley hahaha!) and asked me for tacos today. She got into my buffalo dip once and polished the bowl. Girl be trippin.
I love me some spice, too. The hotter the better!

Early on - she's accepted spicy curries (Thai/Indian) pretty easily, but doesn't like things just doused in hot sauce, much to my husband's dismay. She pulls those right out of her mouth.
Much to the dismay of my local colleagues (who said I was going to give my baby red skin), I ate spicy (think Szechuan food) while pregnant and breastfeeding, and I can't help if that helped establish her tolerance.

As soon as we started feeding him The kid has loved Indian food since the word go.
