When did you start solids and why?
LO is almost five months and I have been planning on waiting until six months to start but she looks so ready that I'm tempted to start earlier.

He turns six months today and were starting today! He had readiness signs earlier but there was no compelling reason to start other than because we were excited and plenty of research to support waiting so we did.

We started early ... about 4 months. He just didn't seem to be getting enough from formula anymore.

We will wait until LO is sitting up (he's almost there!) and after 6 months. We are planning to do BLW, with the occasional purée for fun

Six months... She had all the signs of being ready and looked like Cookie Monster every time we ate in front if her, ha. Seriously, I used to feel bad eating when she was around, she'd get so excited.

A week shy of 6 months. She could sit up independently by then
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
About 5.5 months...maybe a week before that even. We started because she was showing signs of being ready and could sit unassisted.

H will be 6 mos in a week and a half and we just started bananas yesterday.

We waited until 6 months on the pedi's recommendation. I could tell LO was ready before then, but we still waited. She's been eating about a month and is a champ, she loves puréed and has done some blw also.

Following ! Our ped said we can start whenever he is ready between now and 6 mo - and with whatever we want! I was so glad he was very laid back and wasnt all "start with rice cereal". I don't think he's quite there yet but is definitely interested and watches us when we eat ! I think we will start really considering it at 5 mo
grapefruit / 4006 posts
we started at 6 months per our ped's recommendation, but LO didn't really show signs of interest until maybe a week ago (she's 7 months now). she'd just spit it out and gag. now she reaches for whatever we are eating.

We waited until 6 months. We didn't see any rush in starting even tho he had signs of readiness like sitting up and chewing on toys.

Following too! I am trying to wait until at least 5.5 months at the earliest, especially due to the new recommendations, but am really tempted to start earlier because she is close to sitting unassisted, has great head control, and is really interested in food. Ill see if I can hold out!

We started at 6 months as well (a couple days ago). Our Ped recommended it and LO didn't seem interested in food yet.
@SleepyMonkey: we're a couple days in and LO is not liking it! I thought maybe it was cuz rice cereal was bland so we did sweet potato and she just kept gagging! So your LO eventually started liking it? I feel like my LO is going to hate food forever

9.5 months! We're in the delaying solids camp. I don't think we'll start any of our future kids earlier than 8 months.
I believe it's between 6-8 months that most kids present all signs of readiness so we weren't surprised when P was ready "late".

@kodybear: haha yes! there was lots of gagging and confusion on what to do with it. but last week she just all of a sudden got interested and knows how to swallow now, and will open her mouth when hold a piece of food out or a spoon of puree. we gave her tastes of food that we were eating and i think thats what made her interested, since purees can be pretty bland and not so tasty.

Our ped recommended 4 months, but I want to wait until 6 months (my DS is 4.5). Not sure if we'll do BLW or purees.
For those of you whose babies exhibited "signs of readiness", what does that mean? My LO watches as I move a spoon from plate to mouth, but isn't clamoring for the spoon. Just curious, thanks!

@Katrocap: Here's a list of developmental signs of readiness (not including digestive maturity)
- Baby can sit up well without support.
- Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue.
- Baby is ready and willing to chew.
- Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development.
- Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth.
Here's some other good info in regards to baby being ready for solids!

6 months! I would say it took until 7.5 months before LO consistently ate the food we gave him and didn't just spit it back out.

@runsyellowlites: Thanks for the info! My LO definitely is not there yet. Hopefully by 6 months!

we'll be starting around 6.5 months. i really wanted to wait longer but after one ped and now a lactation consultant (that i saw yesterday) telling me to start solids to help him gain more weight, i am not sure what else to do but follow their advice! L is also almost sitting up without support (well he did today for a few moments!) so i am more inclined to start. And as much as i wanted to BLW, i discovered today that DH is not totally comfortable with it, so we may start with a couple of purees first and I guess I will have ease both L and DH into BLW.

@PurpleUnicorn: Idk if you've seen this but P has always been in range... On the low side, but still in range so we continued to delay. Idk what or how your lo's weight gain has been though... Still, thought if you hadn't seen it it might be a good reference to keep around (I always cross reference P's gain with it)

@runsyellowlites: I think i have seen that before and L is a bit under what he should have gained between 4 and 6 months. I calculated his average to be about 2.5 oz per week. I have another appt coming up, so I will see what the doctor says. I am trying to do things to get more milk in him, so hopefully it has an effect.

@PurpleUnicorn: Definitely! Milk is more concentrated with fat in the evening so nurse it up!

We just started a week shy of six months. Our ped wanted us to give it a try just prior to her six month appointment so we could discuss how she does with it. LO was DEFINITELY ready. She would always reach for our plates and forks, can sit unassisted and chews on everything that gets in her mouth. She's not particularly impressed with cereal but she looooooved avocado. She gets so excited when she knows we are about to feed her. She sits in her high chair and flaps her arms like a bird and squeals!
Despite her signs of readiness I wasn't willing to start any earlier than we did. I guess I don't really see the motivation to start early as long as LO is gaining weight on milk alone. To me the risk associated with starting early (higher rates of diabetes, obesity, etc) are too great to start early just because baby seems interested in food.

We started a week after she turned 5 months - I think it was the perfect time for us and LO was so ready.

We started at 5.5 months because E showed all signs of being ready. We were planning on waiting until 6 but we couldn't eat a meal in front of him without him getting upset, grabbing our food and licking his lips. He was making chewing motions with his mouth and was also sitting up unassisted.

We started earlier but it took a while (almost two months) for her to get the hang of it. I don't regret starting early.

5.5 months for my first and 4 months for my second. The peds gave the ok and then I started when I felt comfortable that my babies were ready. They both took to solids very well right away so I guess the timing was right for both.

We introduced solids right on five months but didn't get serious with it until six months. Miss A definitely knew what to do with a spoon when it got close to her mouth!

We started at 5.5 months - LO was definitely ready for food and had been lunging at our food for a while before we finally gave her some purees. She took to everything like a champ and has never looked back!

We started at 6 months - although LO was showing all the signs of being ready much earlier than that. Honestly - even though it's fun to watch him try new things - I honestly wish I had waited longer. It didn't help his sleep at all And giving him solid food is actually a bit of work haha! We did BLW, and LO never really liked pureed foods, so now I'm basically shopping for food for 3 people and cooking extra for him. Obviously it would have come to this eventually anyway - but I definitely miss the days of breastfeeding only

We started after his 6 month checkup - I wanted to talk to the doctor about what they recommend doing.

We started at 5.5 months. Ped gave us the okay at 4 months but I wanted to wait a bit longer.
