When and how did you decide to stop feeding on demand? Also, at what age were the typical hunger cues no longer reliable (e.g. Sticking hands in mouth for fun vs hunger)?

Still feeding on demand at 15 months! She asks me to nurse when she's tired, hurt, or stressed. Or really hungry, but she usually asks for food first if we are at home.

A year. She was on an every 2-3 hour schedule until about 11 months.

Never. I worked full time so she was on a schedule at school but when we were together I nursed her whenever she wanted until we weaned at 15 months

Around 13-14 months, I started being more particular about when/where we nursed on a regular basis. I felt like her hunger signs were fairly reliable for the first few months, but I also felt like we fell into a rhythm where I knew when to expect her to get hungry. I also didn't mind comfort nursing when it seemed like that's what she wanted.

When I went back to work when he was 4.5 months, I couldn't and so he had a loose schedule on week days (bottles and breast), but on weekends, I still fed on demand until after 1 year and we started slowly weaning.

My baby is only 8.5 weeks old, so no help on the on demand part, but I am finding his hunger cues to be less reliable or different as he gets older. He loooooves to chew on his hands and it's not a good hunger sign now. He also sticks his tongue out a lot for fun, so I'm having a harder time telling when he's definitely hungry.

I guess I'm still nursing on demand at 8 months. I offer every 2.5-3 hours, and she usually wants to nurse. If she isn't interested, I wait another half hour or so and offer again. She doesn't really have hunger cues that I notice anymore but will start whining if she wants to eat and I haven't offered.

Still nursing on demand at 13 months, but typically she only asks to nurse once/day now.

Still nursing on demand at 16 months. I do occasionally make her wait now. She very rarely wants to nurse when we're out and about so if she's not hurt/nothing weird is going on and she asks to nurse at say, my husband's office I'll offer a snack and tell her we can nurse when we get home.

When I went back to work when he was 5 months old. Then it was no longer feasible since I had to have a pumping schedule and he could only eat what I pumped!

@gilmoregirl: Same! DD is 9.5 weeks and her hunger cues are getting harder to decipher. When in doubt I just offer and she rarely refuses.

8 months and still nursing on demand when we are together. She's on a loose schedule at daycare, but I feed whenever she asks at home.

@fussygal: if in doubt, throw a boob at it!! You'll probably find that your LO will fall into a routine around her sleep / nap times once they start to consolidate a little.

Around 11 months. I moved towards just nursing first thing in the morning, before naps and before bed.

@Kemma: "When in doubt throw a boob at it." That should be on a t-shirt!
