when did you switch your LO from a crib to a toddler bed?

Following, my LO is showing signs of starting to think about crawling out at 18 months...it worries me. I'm not ready to switch yet

I always recommend keeping them in their crib as long as they are happy. Once they start climbing out then it is time to move them. I always recommend skipping the toddler bed and going right to a twin mattress.

@travelingnanny: is there a specific reason for a twin? We were thinking of switching her right to a full sized mattress?

We switched right before Christmas. She was about 20 months. She was completely ready and the transition was very smooth and transfers have vastly improved since.

@LuLu Mom: my initial plan was to move her straight into a full. But we decided to keep her in her current room which is too small for a full. Also the switch was a desperate parenting resort. it was much easier take a side off the crib then to wait for a deal on a full mattress. Best laid plans.

J's still in his crib - 28 months. He hasn't tried to escape, when he does we'll covert to toddler bed.

At 25 months we are also still in a crib. He has never tried to escape...he's not a daredevil or an avid climber .

I planned to keep my son in his crib until he was 4, but he decided he wanted nothing to do with it at age 20 months. Not having anything available other than a full sized bed at the time, we went right to that and haven't looked back.

Following, we were thinking sometime this fall maybe...maybe just before potty training since she can't really be in a crib if she is potty trained.

@locavore_mama: HAHA, I only ask because we have a very nice full mattress already, and no twin I'm also being cheap!

M just turned 2 and still in her crib, she hasn't tried climbing out yet and when she does we'll transition her to a toddler bed.

We just transitioned DD to a twin this past weekend at 26 months! She climbed out of her crib once around 20 months but hasn't again since, so we left her in it until we had to transition. I plan on using her crib for #2 due at the end of June and we wanted to transition her well before #2 arrives so she doesn't see it as her crib getting "stolen" from her. I would have been ok keeping her in the crib longer if this wasn't the case but now that we transitioned her and see how much she loves her twin bed, I can see she was ready.

We haven't done it yet but all I keep hearing is to wait as long as possible.

When we move in August the plan is to set up a normal bed in her room as well as her crib to get her used to it. Then the plan is to switch to the bed at the end of the year if she seems ready.

For those of you that transitioned - was your kid still a squirmy sleep, or had they calmed down / stopped moving all over the place? I'd love to transition my 20 month old sometime soon but she moves all over her crib so I'm not sure how that would work in a bed!

33 months. We would have kept him in their forever, but needed the crib for the new baby.
