And was it out of a bottle or sippy cup?

I started offering water in a straw cup when mine started eating real amounts of food, so around 7 months. She didn't really figure out the cup until about 8 months, and then I always offered it with meals.
Then at a year I started baby sign, and 'drink' is one of the ones she uses. It is *so* useful, because she signs it really often, some times when I would never have thought to give her water. I would suggest a word or a sign for that very early on.

I started offering sips from a cup at 6 mo when we started solids. He didn't drink a lot til 7 mo and started sippy around then but didn't truly get the hang of it til 8 mo or maybe even later

She started with small sips at 6 months from a Zoli straw cup. She started drinking a lot more around 8 months!
