Right now M goes to sleep for the night sometime between 10 and 11. She'll be 7 weeks on Sunday. Just curious when we can expect her to go down earlier?

LO, at that age, had a bedtime like that, too. It wasn't until we sleep trained (at 3.5 months) that she started having a much earlier bedtime (6-7pm)

L was like that too. By 12 weeks she was going down at 10, by 15 weeks 9pm, and now at 21weeks she's in bed by 7. It seemed like she'd go to bed half an hour earlier every week.

I don't remember when baby #1 did but baby #2 is six weeks old and we give him a bath between 6:30 and 7 so he is (hopefully) asleep between 7 and 8.

R was going between 9-10. This week since starting day care she has been out by 830, tonight it was 810. I just hope she doesn't wake up any earlier.

For the last three weeks, we've been putting our LOs down between 8-9, and they are 12 weeks now.

I want to say it was around 12 - 14 weeks. But it took until around 7 months for her to go to bed at 7:30.

6 months old when we sleep trained, his bedtime switched to 7pm. It took a few days to do it, but it's been good since.

Weissbluth says they should start going to bed much earlier at six weeks. We haven't tried it yet though because our current routine is working so well (and DD was just six weeks as of yesterday).

For the first two months she went to sleep between 9-10, but we gradually transitioned to an earlier bed time as we introduced a nighttime routine. She gets her bath at 7:45 now, and is in bed by 8:30. I don't want to make her bedtime any earlier though... this is the sweet spot for us.

Q: Do they have to go to bed earlier? Or is it something parents want? K used to do 10:30-11 and now we have to start our routine at 9 and she goes to sleep around 10. I don't want it any earlier than that since DH isn't usually home till 9-9:30!

I would say around 6 months is when he started going to bed around 7:30. Before that it was 9pm and we slowly transitioned up to 7:30.

@shopaholic: I'm no sleep expert & I haven't read any books, but all of my nieces & nephews have always had a later bedtime. I wouldn't want Sadie to have a 7 or 7:30 bedtime! That's too early for us. Our lives would revolve around her bedtime.. we could never go to dinner, etc. Plus, I'd rather her sleep later the next morning.

Around 6 wks his bedtime moved from 10 to 7/730. @shopaholic: I think most babies do need/do better with an earlier bedtime (like between 6 and 8) but if its working for k then I would stick with what you're doing! Some babies are night owls

It was 10 or so up until 12 weeks - then slowly started moving back and then was 8/9.
By 4 months, his bedtime was 7 p.m. He started only taking 30 min naps and got pretty cranky by evening so we worked to move it up. By 9 months it was 7:30 p.m. and at 12 months it's still 7:30 p.m., give or take.

@shopaholic: @photojane: I didn't want an earlier bedtime, but over time, I could see that it was what LO needed. We have to bust ass to get him in bed by 7:30 during the week, but he has a naturally set clock that wakes up at 6 a.m. (started around 5 months) so if we put him to bed any later than 8, he just wouldn't get enough sleep.

@shopaholic: I have no idea if they have to, we would just like it to be earlier so we can have some time to ourselves in the evening before bed! DH gets up for work at 5:45 and we've always been early to bed people, so right now we go to bed when she does. Some alone time would be so nice!

@hilsy85: really?? At six weeks? Yikes. I don't think she'd go to sleep that early. We are still battling to get her to sleep right now, even though we started trying an hour and a half ago...
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@sslm: I get that! Dan has to get up at 4am. He doesn't usually go to bed until 9:30 though, so we have an hour together!
squash / 13764 posts
@sslm: it's different for all babies! At 6 wks lo fell asleep one night at 630 an slept til 1230(!) so we figured he could state going to bed earlier and last a long stretch. We kind of chose 7/730 at random...over the next few wks it moved to 630. I would just follow your Los cues...we just happen to notice that around 7 was when lo was doing a long stretch of sleep so we went with it.
pineapple / 12793 posts
@shopaholic: I wish L still had a later bedtime. But she has reset herself to seven. DH gets home at 7:30 it's a big bummer for him.
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
@hilsy85: hmmm. She doesn't fall asleep in the evening. It sucks. She's typically awake from 5 until she goes to bed!!! I feel like she's a night owl. I wonder what we can do to get her sleepy earlier...
squash / 13764 posts
@sslm: do you think she has her days and nights mixed up? Does she sleep a lot during the day? Or she might just be. A night owl?
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
@hilsy85: nope she definitely is good at night once she's asleep. We usually get 9-10 hours with one wake up, and then she doesn't sleep a whole lot during the day. A couple of 30 min naps in the morning, and a longer nap in the afternoon.
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
@photojane: we were just saying we need to start this. We tried a couple of weeks ago with no luck and just got frustrated. All I've been doing since then is diaper change, swaddle, nurse, rock, which ends in multiple nursing and rocking sessions until she finally sleeps.
Tomorrow we are going to try the bath, book, swaddle, nurse, rock thing and see how that goes.
What time should we start that?

We started putting DD down earlier around 3 months. She didn't make the transition on her own, but when we helped her do it, she figured it out pretty easily. (We helped her by simply putting her to bed around 7:30-8 PM, and then if she woke up again before 11 PM or so, we would just sit with her and rub her belly or rock her until she fell back asleep.)
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@sslm: The routine is great for us! By bedtime she is READY for sleep. We start 45 minutes before bedtime, but it depends on how long it takes M to eat & get to sleep. We put her in the bath at 7:45, massage/pj's/story at 8:00, then bottle & cuddles until I put her in the crib drowsy but awake at 8:30!

@photojane: @hilsy85: @winniebee: @oliviaoblivia: Oh I REALLY hope K doesn't naturally shift any earlier! Some nights I'm waiting for DH to come through the door just to do bath time and that's the only time she gets to see him awake!
persimmon / 1328 posts
I would say my LO started going to bed at 7pm around 3.5-4 months. It was a slow transition that she led us through, as we noticed she would consistently melt down at bedtime unless we put her down earlier than we had before. It took a while to find the sweet spot, but bedtime has been so much better since we figured it out!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@shopaholic: yeah u also have a late working husband. He misses T a few nights a week which sucks. I wish we could out him down later! Maybe when he is older.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@shopaholic: So far 8:30 is working for us... she isn't showing any signs of needing an earlier bed time. It could change, but so far so good!
pomegranate / 3053 posts
I think most people work their kid(s) bed time around their schedule. My husband comes home later (7:30-8pm) so my kids have always had a later bed time (9pm or slightly later...). They have later wake times though which works for me. I don't remember when we started it though... I want to say when we sleep trained them around 5.5 - 6 months b/c we wanted them to have a routine starting when we sleep trained them.

9 weeks old, between 9 and 10. I hope she shifts to 7/8pm soon. DH and I get up around 5am for work. I'm hoping once I start having to wake her for daycare that happens? I'm thinking I should start a bedtime routine at a hard time each night soon.

Lo is 7 weeks now and falls asleep around 7-7:30 after I feed him ( he just passes out!) I wake him around 9:30/ 10:00 for a dream feed and he sleeps from then till about 5am. My show has to get up really early for work, so it works out for us now!

@blackbird: We were 9-10 till this week. Last night she slept 8:10-6:15. She isn't napping good at day care so early bedtime is what is needed. I like it so much better

@shopaholic: same for us, except muh earlier...dh does story time before bed and sometimes he gets home in the nick of time!
