With my oldest... a REALLY long time. So long that I can't remember. Then again he's almost 5. With my youngest, gosh, he probably started around 12 months. He ate so much better with his hands and ate much more little cubed food (finger food) at 6/7 months than my oldest. At 22 months he can get about 95% of the food in his mouth with a spoon or fork and I even started letting him use training chopsticks and he's not too bad except he needs help when his fingers slip out of the training supports.

C is good now (spoon and fork), however she has messed herself up (I think) trying to be a righty! She has been using utensils left handed and is now switching herself to her right and is losing her food in the process of the switch! Will be interesting to see if she uses them both ways, or is going to switch to the right!

M is almost 15 months and feeds herself with a fork and spoon, and gets food in her mouth 75% of the time, but it is quite messy!

S is 16 months and is not getting the hang of it. We give him a fork at every meal, but he will stab something and take it off the fork with his other hand and put it in his mouth. He does the same with a spoon. I have a feeling he'll be feeding himself with his fingers for a while!

DS is 14.5 months and isn't very good. The problem with spoons is that I can prefill it but he then turns it upside down when putting it in his mouth so everything falls off. It really only works with something like hummus. He hasn't been able to really scoop stuff up himself yet. As for a fork, he tries to stab something but can't get it. So we put food on the fork and then he's good about making it to his mouth.

wow...LO is 15.5m and NO WHERE near being able to eat using utensils. I mean, when we've tried, he just uses it as a hammer and bangs on his highchair tray, so we've got a ways to go.
