I think it was day 3/4 both times. By 3 there was some milk for sure, then day 4 and 5 is when the cartoon porn star boobs came out.

Within 36 hours with #1 (vaginal birth), and about 30 hours with #2 (C-section).

Sounds like I'm the only one who had it come in later with #2. Day 2 with #1 and Day 4 with #2. But with number 1 labor was spontaneous at 40 weeks and with number 2 my water broke at 37+6 but contractions didn't pick up and they had to essentially induce with Pitocin.

Mine didn't come in until day 5, induced vaginal birth. I don't think baby was really ready to come out yet and I think my body wasn't really geared up for birth/breast feeding either...

Day 4 after a long labor that turned into C-section.
On a side note, I don't feel like anyone really explained to me what it would be like when it came in! I had no idea how rock hard and uncomfortable they would be and i was pretty freaked out that it was going to last a while. Thankfully it was just one night that I was super uncomfortable.

Day 4 after a almost 2 day induction. When we were in the ER with dehydration with T.
I'm still ticked no one recommend supplementing.

I was never sure bc I never got engorged our felt a difference, but he's never had issues with weight gain.

Mine came in on day 6. Baby suffered from dehydration while waiting on me.
@youboots: I think supplementing suggestion came way late for us too. it wasn't untio day 4 that pediatrician looked at his pee & poop chart and suggested supplementing. The nurses who saw the baby more didn't say a thing in our case.

I voted day 3, but more like 3/4. It was basically 72 hours after birth I noticed it had changed (change in color to yellow ish) but not fully all milk (white in color) and that was at night. The next morning they were engorged. So technically it started about 72 hours but was into the next day before it was fully in.
Interested to see if it comes in earlier with #2 since I am 17 weeks pregnant and just finished weaning my DD a few weeks ago.

Around day 5 after a normal vaginal birth (water broke at 37w 5d). He was borderline dehydrated, we were just about to start supplementing that day when it finally came in. Lots of weight checks those first few days. I'm sure the stress of it didn't help!

The night of day 5. After a visit to the ped that morning, we were under instructions to start supplementing if it hadn't come in by the next morning (day 6). I couldn't feel that it had come in, but LO got enough milk to spit up for the first time that night, so that let me know.

Mine never really "came in". It just gradually shifted from colostrum to milk, around day 4-5. I had a long induced labor that ended in a c-section, and I wasn't able to nurse her for about 8 hrs after she was born. I think the delay in nursing hurt us for the first little while.

Not until day 7 . He started showing signs of dehydration on day 4, I think. This time, if no milk by the morning of day 3, I'm going to supplement right away.

If your milk doesn't come in right away, how long are you given before the hospital makes you supplement with formula?

@travelingnanny: For us, it was our pediatrician's call. I had LO on a Monday. Went home on Wednesday. LO had lost more than 10% of his birth weight when we left the hospital so we had to go for a weight check on Friday and Saturday. He lost a couple more oz on Friday and if he hadn't gained or stayed the same on Saturday the pediatrician wanted us to supplement. He stayed the same on Saturday, I think my milk had started coming in on Friday night. We did another weight check on Monday and he had gained a couple ounces.
She also gave us the signs for dehydration which was few wet diapers and coral colored urine/crystals in the diaper.

It was the night we came home from the hospital, so almost day 3.

@travelingnanny: They don't really "make" you, especially not at he hospital. Most people aren't there long enough. But you'll have a pediatrician appointment soon after leaving the hospital and they will ask about how many diapers and other things related to baby getting dehydrated. No one can make you supplement, but believe me, it's a way better option than having a baby get so dehydrated they need an IV, and then possibly have tons of trouble getting the IV in.
A little bit of formula can keep baby healthy and happy if your milk is delayed.

Day 4 or 5 don't remember. We supplemented right away because she was jaundiced. After my milk came in I stopped formula and haven't needed it since!
