I have still been cutting my 13 months food up into small bites or french fry sized strips. I can't remember when it's OK to start giving them something like a sandwich that they take bites off of rather than precut. Anyone have any idea?

No clue! My 16 month old still takes too big of bites for me to feel comfortable giving her a sandwich.

Just this weekend I gave A (12.5mo) a grilled cheese sandwich just cut into triangles. She's been having PB&J like that for a couple of weeks. I wouldn't do like a turkey and cheese like that yet, though.

My 19 month old has been eating peanut butter sandwiches for a few months. I just smash them down not sure about meat and cheese tho because of the volume.

@Mrs. Pickle: I know, he shoves everything in his face.

@littlebug: hmmm ok. maybe I will try doing some of those rollup sandwiches. Like in a tortilla.

I wouldn't give a sandwich to my 18 month old, I still cut everything into small bites (and will for a while). He tends to stuff several bites at once in his mouth!

DD had PB or PB/J, or just cheese either cut into bite size or strips. At 2 she still likes them in strips but we can add meat too

I give my 14 month old tortilla roll ups- it makes me laugh because she looks like such a big kid eating them. For bread sandwiches she just won't really eat them unless they are in squares but I would trust her if she would.
My older daughter wouldn't eat sandwiches at all until like 2.5.

I just started doing sandwiches this past week for my 20 month old. She probably could have much sooner I just never really thought about it until we packed lunch for a picnic.

I would give my 16 month old a sandwich but I know there would be a mess.
On the other hand we waited so long with my 4 year old she never did like lunch meat type sandwiches, only PB&J.

At about 18 months we do sandwiches cut into strips. Like maybe 5 or 6 strips per sandwich.

@MrsSRS: Aaah I totally forgot about the strips. Those worked well when dd was about two-ish! Second that recommendation.

@travellingbee: we do roll ups with shredded spinach, cream cheese, and lunch meat or shredded chicken. My bigger LO likes to dip them in salsa. We also do pb&j, tuna salad and shredded carrots, and scrambled eggs and cheese as roll ups.

I think 15 months is when she had her first sandwich (it was a turkey slidwr). I trust her more with taking bites then I do with little pieces. She will take a handful of little bites and shove them in her mouth, or keep adding more before swallowing.

Gosh I can't remember but I would say it was somewhere between 18-20 months? But he still won't really have any sandwich besides PB. I've tried turkey and salami and things like that and he just isn't interested.

@travellingbee: mostly peanut butter, but I have also done cream cheese. And she eats tacos- I spread a little Greek yogurt or sour cream on the tortilla first to help things stick, then ground meat, diced tomatoes, cheese... she's not really a fan of lunch meat.

My 18 month old eats bites from a sandwich just fine, so long as I am the one to hold it. If I give her the sandwich she just disassembles it, and won't really eat it.

@travellingbee: it's funny because I don't eat sandwiches either so maybe it's genetic
He eats plenty of things he doesn't see me eat so I don't think it's learned.

Kid 1 first had sandwiches around 18 months.
Kid 2 starting eating pb&j (cut in quarters) at 8
Months. Whoops. In retrospect it may have been a bit early but it was so nice to be able to make Them the same food for lunch

I did ham, cheese, and lettuce sandwiches at a year old. I tore off bite-size pieces by hand.
I did pb&j sandwiches earlier than that, but substituted organic applesauce instead of jelly.
