My son has been eating stage 1 solids for about 4 weeks now. I feed him cereal that is pretty thick so I was wondering if he would be able to have the stage 2 solids. Is it only a matter of texture?

I think its texture and amount. I haven't used baby food in a long time, but aren't the stage 2 containers bigger? Not that it matters, you can always just save what he doesn't eat! If you think he is ready, try it. You will see how he reacts to it, and its all pretty soft so it shouldn't be too big of an adjustment.

It is the above plus they introduce new food groups so your baby's digestive system needs to be mature enough to handle them. They have age guidelines on the food.

I'm in agreement with Rosie Girl and Andrea - use the basic age guidelines on the food (plus or minus a couple weeks) and give it a try.
