We started at 6 months when she could sit up. Otherwise, she hung out in the rock n play while we ate.

At 5 months he sat in one of the high back Graco ones at my uncle's house and did great. We don't have space at our place so we use the Iglesina hook on. We started that at 6 months and he does great. For small space city living, the hook on ones are great, but it's a HUGE pain to clean the fabric. If I had the space I'd probably get something like the Boon Flair, those huge Graco monstrosities, or even just the simple Ikea antelope plastic ones.

We have a fisher price space saver high chair that reclines way back, so we started using it at mealtimes just like you mention when my son was prob around 3 months.

We started at 6 months, when we introduced solids.

@Pumpkin Pie: I think we could have done the high back one sooner, we just didn't have one. We used the jumperoo, bumbo seat, and I tried to hold/babywear him as much as possible. But honestly he spent a lot of time on his play mat and had a flat-ish head. It really stressed me out for a while, but at 7 months it's basically corrected itself without any intervention (beyond 2 PT session to teach us some stretches).

We started using it at 4 months. He would sit with us while we ate dinner He didn't start solids until 6 months, but he liked to be where the action was.

We used the bumbo until about 8 months when we finally bought a high chair. Everything became so nice once we had the high chair - no more worries of her falling out of the bumbo. The high chair we got (ikea blames) we love, but we've heard it works best with older babies, post 6 months. So I think if we had tried earlier we would have been disappointed.

We had her in the fisher price bouncy chair and baby bjorn babysitter chairs as a newborn until 4 months, then bumbo from 4-6 months, then a real high chair at 7 months when she could sit up on her own.
