Did you have contractions beforehand, or did it completely take you by surprise?

I was in labor for like... 10-12 hours before my water broke. The timing's kind of fuzzy for me. I was already at the hospital, and they talked about breaking it for me, but my midwife suggested we wait because my labor seemed to be progressing well and she thought it might break on it's own. And it did! It broke while I was trying to go to the bathroom (which worked out nice because most of it went into the toilet instead of making a huge mess, haha).

Mine broke when I got up off the couch and walked to get the laundry. We checked into the hospital an hour later and I still wasn't having contractions. It was probably another hour before they started.

My water broke by surprise and then contractions started right after at about 2.5 minutes apart. It was crazy.

Mine broke during a routine check four hours after I got the epi! We though I'd only be 4 or 5 cm dilated and the midwife would have to artificially break my water, but it broke on its own as she started the check and I was 10 cm dilated to boot! I'd been having proper contractions for 16 hours at that point.

Broke while I was in the tub. It just felt like I maybe peed a little.

It broke suddenly but I had been having "bunchings" for a while before. In hindsight I suppose those were mild contractions. Oh well.

My doctor broke it when I was 8cm along and had had my epidural.

With my second pregnancy it randomly broke while I was carrying my daughter inside for bedtime! It broke at 37 weeks 1 day.

Mine broke after I got the epidural (which unbeknownst to me was at about 9cm!) I thought I had an accident, thinking the epidural made me lose control of bodily functions and they were like, no - your water just broke. Ha!

It broke while I was peeing! I didn't have any contractions until about 2 hours later and then BOOM, every two minutes.

The first time I was already having contractions so it was no surprise. Second time it broke at 5 a.m. while I was still sleeping and it woke me up so yea I was a bit surprised.

My contractions were about 12 minutes apart when my water broke. I had been having contractions since the early afternoon (water broke around 2:30 a.m.) I was trying to rest in bed because I knew the baby was coming soon and then I felt the gush.

My water broke at the hospital when the doctor did it. I was about 6-7cm at that point. He broke it and in a few hours time, LO arrived.

During contractions! It was such a weird feeling. It kind of hurt only cause I had a really intense contraction at the same time.

I was induced and my doctor broke my water....
then asked me if "I felt that" and informed me that my son had just peed on me. I have the comedian of OB/GYN's

Mine didn't break until I was a couple of hours into pushing! They only broke it because LO had to be vacuumed.

I started having contractions at 6:45am and my water broke at 4:45pm when I got to the hospital. It broke as I went to pee while changing into my gown. DH always thanks me for waiting until I was in the hospital room.

@Espion: same for me!
I was in the hospital waiting to be induced, shifted in bed trying to get more comfortable and my water broke. Heard it pop like a water balloon. Contractions came hard and fast about 10 minutes later, nothing before then.

We don't know when it broke because LO's head was so low and engaged that the water didn't come out until I delivered. When I was 10cm my doctor went to try to break it and discovered there was no fluid (baby even came out with a couple little marks on the top of her head from my doc trying to break it with that little tool).
