@Penny Lane: honestly it is so hot and uncomfortable right now I wouldn't mind freezing my butt off for a couple of weeks to appreciate this weather again. its miserable and I cant do beach because he is too little to take with my hyper puppy.

@JoJoGirl: We just moved to Darwin 6 months ago for DH's work - he's a Brit/Aussie from Brisbane but with his job (engineering), we've been moving every year or two as one project ends and another begins. I'm from Chicago originally but came to Aus as a backpacker several years ago and met DH as a result! Have you been to Darwin?!? It's hotter than blazes here but is definitely an interesting, albeit remote, corner of the world!

I have not been there, but spent 6 months in Oz doing environmental stuff in college (was based in Cairns but spent time on Lizard Island, the Daintree, and a whole month in Cape Tribulation) so everyone on my program was dreaming of getting to Darwin -
@JoJoGirl: How cool! I haven't been to Lizard Island but the Daintree and Cape Trib are amazing! What an awesome experience! Darwin definitely isn't as pretty as those places, and a thousand times more remote, but I can imagine from a scientific viewpoint, it would be fascinating. I hope you make it here some day and get to check out the surrounds!

@Ree723: Yep! They hosted me at their research station (set a bit back from the bat house and the main road) for the month while i did research for a big paper for my program. And they're super cute flying foxes, not ugly scary bats
