If you have a sitter, other than family, how did you find them? How did you know they were a right fit?

I asked LO's daycare teacher and she has babysat him twice. It was a relief to be able to go to someone he was already comfortable with.

We have used daycare teachers, randoms from care.com, and references from friends. They have all been adequate (on time, responsible, good with the kids) but I have just hit it off a bit better with some than others. The ones I have liked best become my primary and the others are backups.
Mostly I just went on gut feel. For the care.com ones, it was pretty easy to filter based on email style/grammar, and a quick chat on the phone. Then we would meet in person and I would call references.

We've used good friends, our former nanny, and one of the assistants at LO's school.

We've never used anyone but family. Once DH makes up his mind we are going to start asking daycare teachers.

Care.com! We posted an ad and received way more responses than we could interview, so we were able to cherry pick from those. We interviewed two women and just had a great gut feeling from one of them. She's been a God send!

Sittercity and care.com! I also get lots of responses pick a few of the best ones, have a phone chat, call their references and then have them come over to the house prior to the night. It's been all good!

Recommendations from friends and neighbors for the most part. I chat with them on the phone and have them come by the house to meet LO before the day they are babysitting. We've also had neighbors and friends babysit.

Right now, our pet sitter also babysits for us. We know and trust her, but she's only ever babysat after LO is in bed. The sitter has been over when LO is awake before so we could sort of test the waters and they seemed to get along okay but I'm not totally convinced she'll be the best "awake-time"sitter. And we need a backup anyway. But we haven't taken steps to find anyone else yet...its daunting.

We've found 3 really excellent sitters on care.com. Each time I posted an ad and had tons of responses and interviewed people from there. It's a sort of tedious process but we've had great luck.
ETA - we've used these sitters for my work hours as well so we had good reason to have a pretty involved search.

We found our nanny on Sittercity.com. She is AMAZING. Like my kids truly love her and I feel like we hit the nanny jackpot.
I hired a nanny before on Care.com but they do this shade ball thing where they charge you an annual fee even after you closed your account and I had a huge fight with them because they are a scam.
