Other than major life changes (moving, new baby, etc) when and why do you move a child to a bed from their crib?

Because they are climbing out of the crib (DS)
Because I was just done with cribs and ready to move on (DD)
DS was 3 and DD was almost 3

I'm so scared to do this! Haha. She already doesn't nap I can't imagine what she would get into if she could get out of her bed.

I'm not in a rush! LO is almost 2.5 and we don't have any crib issues yet.

@autumnlove: I'm not either! We're having some bedtime routine changes (by her) and it's just making me think about it. I'm not really ready for her to be "set loose" yet!!
@Bao: hahaha my worry, too. What would she be doing if she wasn't confined to her crib...
@Mamaof2: I'm happy to hear about kids who aren't moved until they are 3!! This is all new territory...like everything, I guess with parenthood.

Because he refused to sleep in the crib any longer. I thought he'd be in that crib until he was at least 3, but at 20 months, he had other ideas.

I know a lot of people transition because their kids climb out of the crib and that's dangerous! The drop from a bed is a lot shorter than the crib rail.
We were able to get over the crib climbing (he followed directions to not climb) and since he's small for his age and we had a second crib, we did not transition him until past 3 years old. Although we did change the crib to a toddler bed with rail (removed front wall of crib and installed toddler bed rail). It was nice not to have to haul him in and out of the crib anymore, and to be able to actually climb in and cuddle him. Then we wanted to get rid of the other crib so we transitioned him to a bed and put that crib in LMW's room.

I imagine I won't move my last baby until she demands it. It's nice having them confined to the bed and not able to get up and play when they're supposed to be napping! Or, maybe we'd need to convert for potty training?

I agree that it is mostly life changes and climbing that prompt people to make the switch. Otherwise just pick whenever feels right to you. I know one friend waited until her child's 3rd birthday and surprised her with a big girl room. Some kids do really well in cribs and there is no sense rocking the boat. Eventually they will ask to switch and that is as good a reason as any.

M is staying in her crib until she learns to climb out! I don't care if that means she 4 before I convert it to a toddler bed!!

my LO learned to climb out at around 20 months. I stuck her in a sleep sack and now she can't climb out since her feet are webbed together in the sack. I know she's eventually going to figure out how to get the zipper opened, but until then ... she's safely contained in the crib. I KNOW she'll get in and out of bed multiple times if we transitioned her to a toddler bed and I'm just not physically or mentally ready for a long stretch of bad sleeping to deal with it! LOL

We transitioned DS at almost 20 months to crib with toddler rails (since we had a conversion kit) because he was trying to climb out of his crib and kept getting stuck. We were afraid for his safety. Then we transitioned him to a twin sized bed just a little before he turned 2. We needed his crib for DD.
We're planning on giving it a few more months (read that as another 6 months) but we'll probably do the same thing with DD. After all, she's used to climbing into big brother's bed to play and they already room together. I'll probably wait until she starts trying to climb out but we'll see.

27 months and I have no intentions of transitioning her. I can't even imagine the ruckus she would cause if she was allowed to roam free in her room at sleep time!! I guess we will transition her when she tells us she hates the crib. Right now she doesn't know any different.

I have no plans to switch her at all before 3 as long as she isn't trying to climb or at a risk of getting hurt.

Agree with everyone. My little guy is 31 months and I dread the day we take him out of the crib. He fights naps and bedtime so as it is.......
