Is it a guarantee that there will be at least a one-night stay in the hospital? I'm being induced at 8AM tomorrow. If I give birth in the afternoon, is it still likely that we will stay the night?

Our hospital is one night for vag birth, two for c-section (I only stayed one though). With my first (induction) I was there for six days.

@CatchAFallingStar: my induction took three, ended in section, then two day stay for me, DD lost 12% of her weight so we had to stay another day until my milk came in.

My hospital is two nights, clock starts at 5pm or so. If you deliver that evening, that night doesn't "count"
Did you take a tour? It would probably be in the packet

We could not be released until at the earliest 24 hours after giving birth. That was for vaginal delivery. C section may be longer.

Our hospital required a 48 hour stay after a non-complicated vaginal delivery. C-section could have been longer. IDK if any hospital would allow you to go home the same day you deliver (and I really can't see myself wanting to do so).

@pinkcupcake: Same with our hospital. I stayed overnight 2 nights w/ LO#1 and 3 nights w/ LO#2, both vaginal deliveries. I didn't want to leave. LOL.

My hospital for DD1 did a standard two night stay for a vag birth, four nights for a section. My hospital for DD2 had the same but also had the option to go home after four hours if you had a vag birth with no complications and the baby was healthy, so that's what we did. Arrived at the hospital at 4:00 am at 4 centimetres dilated and we were home by lunchtime with a new baby. It was AMAZING.

I would bet on it, but you could just ask when you get there tomorrow or call tonight.

@HabesBabe: LOL me neither. I could have totally stayed an extra day. They kicked us out at 48 hours ON THE DOT. My daughter was born at 1.07PM; at exactly 12PM the nurses started readying us to go home, and at 1PM, they made me get in a wheelchair & hurriedly pushed me out. I felt so rushed!

I think there is a good chance you'll stay overnight. I was there 3 nights because DS was early/in the NICU, but the other women that delivered same time that I did stayed overnight one night (unless it was a c section).

The term "allow" is so crazy to me! Yikes ...
As a birth photographer, I've seen who holds the power: the nurses. Get in good with your l&d team, and they'll give you the best info!! If there's any chance of being able to go home earlier than normal, they'll tell you how. At our local hospital, it's a matter of asking to see family practice vs. the in-house peds. They always sign for an early discharge.

I had an uncomplicated vaginal birth and stayed two nights. we were discharged 48 hours after she was born.

The earliest we could leave was 24hrs from birth because of newborn screening which can only happen after 24hrs. And then only if everything checks out and your ob and baby's pediatrician clear you both for discharge.

@Ree723: I'm sorry - - come again?! 4 hours? How?! No vaccines or newborn screening?!
pomegranate / 3595 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: My induction was scheduled for around the same time. I delivered at 5 pm. We could have gone home the next day but opted to stay until the following day for more breastfeeding support. I think we went home around 2?
Good luck tomorrow! How exciting that you will meet LO so soon!

@regberadaisy: We had a home birth, and our midwives were gone after 3 hours (the standard). We did not do any vaccines at birth. Vit K shot was given to baby at 1 hour post birth. Newborn exam was done at 1 hour. They cooked us breakfast, massaged my tummy, did sutures, monitored baby, and cleaned the house within that time.
As long as there isn't excessive bleeding, no retained placenta, baby scored well on all tests, and the uterus is going down, there's not much more to do past 3 hours.
They do stop by the next day, and the next for care and observation.

@littlejoy: oh no, I understand that's common with a birthing center or home birth. But @Ree723 has a regular hospital birth as far as I could tell.
I felt awesome after #2 and probably could've gone home after four hours but hospital requires pediatrician and OB OK to discharge.
ETA :lol my initial post was more a shock that that the hospital would agree to a 4hr post birth discharge.

My hospital had everyone "check out" at the same time in the morning at least 24 hours after delivery. They treated everyone so well that I was in no rush to leave, honestly!
grapefruit / 4819 posts
@regberadaisy: The Vitamin K and Hep B vaccines were done immediately after birth, and midwives came to our home the following three days to do the heel prick and other newborn screens, after which we were discharged from the hospital midwives' care. It was a great system! This was in Australia, by the way, and is a very normal course of action.

@Ree723: ah, overseas. Makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying. I was just curious because as long as our doctors cleared DD 2 & I we wanted to be home ASAP.

I could have left after 3 hours if all went well. In Ontario Canada. I ended up with a 3rd degree tear and stayed 2 nights. Everyone I know has stayed just 1 if there wasn't complications.
pomegranate / 3375 posts
@regberadaisy: I understood that. I thought a 4 hour discharge sounded insane (in an awesome way) too! So cool they have that option!!

Stay in the hospital as long as they'll let you! I was there 5 nights, 1 for induction and then 4 nights after. I could have stayed another night because baby was delivered after 8pm, but we decided to go home. We loved it in the hospital. It was quiet, there was room service, they had a dessert cart every afternoon, everything was close together, and it was easy to have privacy to breastfeed.
At home my parents were there, and while they were a huge help with meals and the dog, it wasn't the same as being in the hospital.

I was cleared the following morning after a 3 pm birth but DD had jaundice so needed to stay another night. I'm glad we ended up staying for BFing help but I think with future kiddos, I'd be fine with getting outta there ASAP as long as we all check out okay.

@CatchAFallingStar: my hospital required me to stay for 2 midnights after baby's birth for a vaginal delivery. It might be a state requirement? I think sometimes they make exceptions though, but they are required to keep you that long if you want. Julia was born at 2am on Tues and I was discharged on Thurs (but then we were immediately admitted to Peds due to baby's jaundice). I was in a lot of pain due to my stitches and I liked having them take care of me.

Our hospital does the PKU (?) blood tests at 24 hours. We were ready to go 5-6 hours before that but they made us wait.

I thought I would be annoyed at "having" to stay in the hospital, but I wound up really appreciating the support. My son was born at 1am. We checked into our postpartum room at around 4am and then stayed for two more nights.
On the other hand, it sort of felt like we were there forever, and I was excited to get home. Plus I missed our kitties!

We went in for an induction on Tues morning, but I had requested a slow induction so we could try to avoid unnecessary interventions (my dr was flying back from FL that day too - really wanted her there with me). We stopped the induction in the evening, I was able to eat and sleep, and we started again Wed morning at 4am. They broke my water at 10am, and my DD arrived by 8pm. Because she was born at night, we stayed Wed and Thurs night, discharged at 11 on Friday. So 3 nights total?

At my hospital they recommended 2 nights after an uncomplicated vaginal birth, although you *could* check out after 1 night if you had a very uncomplicated birth and the OB and ped signed off. It was 3-4 nights for C section. I was induced monday at 10am. Had LO by c section 4:33am Tuesday. Checked into our postpartum room at 7:30am Tuesday. Checked out of the hospital at 11am on Friday (could've stayed until Sat but I opted not to).

Yeah, you'll most likely be staying the night! I had an uncomplicated birth, baby born at 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning and I couldn't leave until Sunday afternoon!

@Little Misters Mom: Same for my hospital. I was really irritated because my 24 hours fell at 2 a.m., which is exactly when I want to be woken up to have blood taken. I got out of there as quickly as I could the next morning, so we were out the door by 36 hours after.

I stayed the full 48 hours after delivery. I pushed for so long and was so swollen I had to have a catheter for 24 hours after the birth since I couldnt pee on my own. It's not a good feeling when every nurse that came in to check my stitches commented on how incredibly swollen I was

I went in on a friday night for my induction, it took until monday, and then I stayed until Friday. I hated being told 'just wait, you'll see', but truly - you're unlikely to be jumping out of bed. Those two days went by so quickly.

My hospital was 24 hours for vaginal. Unfortunately with LO2 I had her at 2:30 am so we ended up staying for 2 nights.
pomelo / 5041 posts
The primary reason you must stay over 24 hours has to do with certain tests they perform on your baby at certain periods of time after birth. FWIW our vaginal deliveries average closer to 36 hours and I stayed three nights for my c-section.
