We will use after care. Elementary starts late enough that I will be able to drop her off at school and get to work in time. She will be at aftercare until about 5:15 or 5:30, just like she is now at daycare. That is, unless my husband finds a job with flexibility, then he would pick her up in the afternoons. We will probably use the school's aftercare for consistency.

Probably not- I SAH now and will probably start working again in some form when the youngest is in school, but hopefully on a flexible schedule so I can still drop off and pick up at regular times. But we will see how it goes- that's a long way off.

I'm not sure yet. School ends at 3 different times each week, so it's going to be a bit complicated because daycare for LO2 is in the opposite direction. I've heard there is something available, but I don't have other info yet. We register this Friday, so I hope we have more information soon!

we probably will--with the traffic around here, i don't see how we could get in our hours at work without before and after school care.

yes! Our town has public pre-k starting at 3 years old, so if we get into one of the closer locations (it's a lottery system), she will go and we'll have to pay for before AND after care.
Pre-k is 8:30-2:30. Before care is 7:30-8:30 and after care is 2:30-5:30. This is offered at the preschool itself--for working parents that need later hours, a few child care centers in town do pick up/drop off after care until 6:30 pm. So they pick the kiddos up at pre-k and take them to the daycare till 6:30.

It depends on when DH goes back to work. He is a SAHD now so we won't as long as he is still at home. But I think we will wind up using before school care so I can drop one child off potentially. Our school district has a form you can fill out to have your kids dropped off at somewhere other than your home for free so I might see if the kids can go over to my ILs and then I would pick them up there.

Yes. I will use after school care at his current daycare. They have a van that leaves his future elementary school and goes to our daycare (it's a mile away). Then he would also get to go on teacher work days when the students have off (I'm a teacher at a different school)

To not having to do that we are seriously considering going to a private school which is with the same provider that their daycare and preschool is now. We could then drop off as early as 7:30am and pick-up is 5pm.

Hopefully not. I'm planning to try to get a job in the school when I'm ready to work full time. I'm a counselor in private practice part time right now, so I'm just trying to focus my trainings on adolescent treatment, and build a solid amount of experience in the area. My mom was a school teacher, and it was awesome to have the same schedule as her. Hoping to do the same. We will see though- if the opportunity for a job at a college comes along, I wouldn't be able to say no.

Yup! Elementary doesn't start till 7:45am and I like to be at work before then so I can have evening time with the family. And yes on after care since school is released well before I get off work.

My DD went to after care up to twice a week last year, and this year she went once a week till recently. This year she hates it. She said the teachers yell at the "bad" kids. If I go back to work full time, she'll have to go more often, though.

My son is in K, we do aftercare but only till 4:30, then a grandparent (T,W,TH) or the Babysitter (M,F) picks him up. School day starts at 8:50, drop off is at 8:30. We thought about doing after care till 6pm but it would just make his day too long. Plus in the fall and spring we want him to get extra play ground time. Luckily we only live 3 blocks from the school so its an easy walk home!

Not before but we will use aftercare. It's at LO's school and run by the YMCA.

We will most likely use after care a few days a week.... Buuuuut a lot will change by then even though it's only 1.5 years away. We will be moving and will both have different jobs, so who knows!!

Right now, my plan is to reduce my hours once LO is in school so I can handle pickup duties. DH already does drop-off in the morning so I can get in early to make that possible. If I decide to stay full-time, we'd probably get a nanny/baby-sitter if possible as opposed to aftercare. I think that solution will be more efficient for our household, especially since we're planning on at least 2-3 kids.

Hard to tell right now. I currently SAH, but that can change in the upcoming years when both LOs are in school. I would probably utilize after school care if I go back to work.

I hope to be in a more flexible position by then (almost 3.5 years from now), but if not, then yes, probably after care unless we move closer to my parents.

We'll see. I may look into keeping a babysitter / "housekeeper" instead. We currently use grandparent care two afternoons per week, so if that can continue then we may only need coverage three days per week, so the costs may be similar to have someone at home to also help with some chores around the house.

Probably not. DH's schedule will allow him to do drop-off and only one day a week would pose problems for pick-up. We will probably try to do a nanny share for that day, since the before/after programs here are full-week and it's also crazy hard to get a spot.

@mediagirl: Yes. LO is in grade 1 and she attends an in-house YMCA aftercare program at her school. For no more than 20 mins, 3 afternoons a week. I am able to drop her right to her classroom in the mornings. The people that work at the YMCA are morons which kinda sucks.
Pros: - the after school care is located within her school, she likes going to play with her friends, there are other kids there from her class, she's only there for a short time, 3 days a week.
Cons: - the people that work there are not the stellar childcare providers that one would hope for, its SUPER expensive for the small amount of time we use it, there are kids who range in age from 5-12 so some not-so-great older influences.

Depends ... SAHM right now and even though I plan on going back to work when she's a little older, I hope to work only part time so I can pick her up and be home with her after school.

probably not as i work for myself, but it's possible that i would need 1-2 days a week with longer hours, so aftercare is an option!

The private school we plan on sending our kids to offers both early and after care for pretty cheap, but the hope is for me to work during school hours only and handle pick-up and homework. Obviously, its great that the option is there on campus for the times when work is busy and I have to stay later, but I have the ability to work a flexible schedule and DH works from home a few days a week, so I don't think we'll have to depend on it every day.

Most likely! I'm trying to get into teaching so we can be on more of the same schedule, but I assume I'll need to stay after the bell frequently (at least the first few years).
Plus I want to teach at the high school level which starts later and ends later than elementary school around here.
But hopefully it won't be quite as long as what my work schedules requires now (7am-6pm), either way.
