If your school has the option to purchase lunch, will you do that? Or will your child bring lunch from home?
Even though the menu for our elementary school looks pretty good, I think DS1 will bring home lunch, at least to start. He is fairly picky and I can't see him eating fish nuggets for lunch. He's as thin as a rail so I want to make sure he actually eats something during the day!

We pay for lunch per semester, so my kid eats at school. I don't know of anyone who brings their lunch and there are 2-3 main course options that always include a vegetarian option.

We packed at first, and then he went through a phase where he wanted to buy, and now he's back to packing. I suppose I should be glad because it's way cheaper for me to pack him a PBJ, which is what he ends up getting at school half the time.

It's so far away, but we'll most likely pack. If she expresses she wants to buy lunch once in a while, maybe we will do that as a "treat". I know when I was young I mostly packed and buying lunch was such a treat to me haha.

All your elementary school questions are stressing me out, and I still have 1.5 years before I have to deal with this!!
Unless Xander outgrows his dairy allergy before elementary school, he'll probably have to bring his lunch, or at least milk. He's used to getting warm lunches, so I'm not looking forward to having to pack cold lunches for him, if that ends up being the situation.

We pack. We packed for PreK too. School lunches are not enough food for DS1...and truthfully, he doesn't like most of what they serve. However, we do sometimes give him ice cream money on Friday.

If my LO is still in the same program in K, I'll probably keep packing her lunch. Their menu isn't very healthy at all, much les healthy than her menu at daycare. They say they have "veggies" every day, but they are odd things like a slice of tomato, or 2 cucumber slices. And they have pizza, chicken nuggets, other breaded items like fish sticks or chicken cutlets, and macaroni and cheese type entrees. yuck.

@Adira: There are lots of ways to keep food hot! My kiddo basically only eats hot foods too, so I've amassed a variety of regular food thermoses, bento thermoses, etc. She always gets leftovers from the night before. We do both, but honestly she buys lunch more than she takes. The school puts out the menu monthly and there are two entrée choices each day.

We started out with a plan to do half buy and half bring but LO quickly learned she prefers home lunch, even on menu days she circles to buy. So we pack 98% of the time. It is easier for me because now I don't have to fill the lunch account, worry if she is eating (she is petite) and I get to give her favorites. I have always wanted to do some decoration bento thing but just hasn't happened yet.

So far I have packed her lunch every day. She is super picky so I doubt she would eat much on most days, although today they had Domino's pizza on the menu and I half-heartedly asked if she wanted to buy. But then I worry she won't have time to eat if she has to stand in the lunch line. So we pack.

The majority of the time DS1 gets a packed lunch, but I'd say 1-2x every two weeks he gets hot lunch.

When she starts kindergarten she will bring her lunch. We are vegetarian and I don't trust her getting through the line without meat. I also don't trust what local school system serves.

My mom used to get 2 copies of the monthly school lunch menu and put them on the fridge with our names on it. Then we would circle the days we wanted to buy - I think no more than once a week unless we begged because our favorite dishes appeared twice in one week or something. The rest of the days she packed.
