I am a teacher and love my job and students, but am dreading sending my DS to daycare in August. I am very lucky that I was able to take maternity leave from when he was born (January) until August. I was completely prepared to return to work (and looking forward to it), but now really wish I could stay home with him for a little while longer, at least another year. Unfortunately DH and I just can't swing that financially ...

@Katrocap: I'm sorry that you have to go back to work before you want to. You've had a great amount of time with him already though! I unfortunately had to go back to work after 12 weeks. Ideally, I would have liked to stay home for 6 months, but my work doesn't allow that. Just try to savor the time you have left with him! I have a feeling we would all say "if we could just have a few more months..." Going back is never easy!

I understand completely. Everything seems hunky dory until that baby comes out and you look at this person that you made and think, "Really? I have to leave you with someone else while I just go make money??"
I feel your pain. It was hard for me to go back to work. Once I got back, I realized it's probably better for me to be at work and get her socialized in daycare. It was hard the first month and got better as it went on. Now it's like a normal part of life for me. Good luck!!

The frustrating part is I'm just starting to get over PPD and truly enjoy this time. I'm fortunate I still have 3 months to do so.@mediagirl: I think you're right, ultimately it's better for me to work and feel like a more well-rounded adult. Glad to hear daycare got better as time went on and is now normal for you!

@Katrocap: Honestly for me the anticipation of going back to work was SO MUCH worse than actually doing it. I cried the first few days. But then every day when I went to pick her up she was smiling and she eats and sleeps great at school so once I knew she was thriving there things were a lot easier. So don't worry, the transition may be easier than you expect. Obviously you'll still miss LO all day, but you're helping to provide for his future and he'll do great, promise!

And every day when I get home and I see that face light up when he sees me is seriously the best feeling!

Aww, hugs. I agree with everyone else, it does get a lot better once you are actually back at work and have had a bit of time to adjust.

I agree - thinking about going back to work was much worse than actually doing it (LO is 4 mo). I still think I would have liked a year at home with her, at least, but being back at work isn't the horror that I made it out to be in my mind. I do wish she'd take better naps at day care though....

There are a lot pros and cons for being a SAHM and a WO/AHM.
I think you have to look inside your heart to see if a SAHM is really what you want.
If you do than you should run the numbers every which way to see if you can make it work. You might also consider a part time job or see if you can go part time in your current job. Maybe start a home business?
I hope I'm not offending you because maybe you have a great budget, but it always seems there is still some fat to be trimed in a monthly budget.
One of my co-workers really wanted to be a SAHM, she ran the numbers a bunch of times, the only way they were able to make it work was downsizing their house (I felt that was a bit extreme) so they sold their house and moved into a more modest house. I personally would have never thought of doing that but I thought that was a creative soultion.
Anyways with all that said, I just want to wish you the best of luck! What ever your choice I always believe things will work out for the best.
