This is not a pressing matter, since LO is only 1. But, I've started thinking about whether we will do private kindergarten or send him to public shool and then after care. I'm leaning towards private kindergarten because it will be sooo much easier and we love his current school. I can drop LO off normally and he can stay there all day. If he goes to public school, I will have to change daycares and probably change my work hours. What are other people thinking about doing?

i would send to kindergarten not only for the cost savings, but i think too many years in one class/school kids might get bored. i wouldn't keep my kids in the same daycare/preschool program longer than 2 years based on what i've seen with charlie and olive.

We will be doing kindergarten and after care. I want to save any money I can! Plus I think it would be better for her to start school at the same time as the other kids she will be going with for years.

We're going to send her to kindergarten. It's cheaper to send her to the private school for kindergarten and pay for after care than it would be to keep her in daycare kindergarten.

Yikes! I guess I need to think about this more because I was planning on just keeping Xander at his current daycare (assuming we still like it then) for kindergarten. Mainly because when he starts elementary school, this daycare provides before/after care and will drive them to school, which is convenient for me!

Our current school will bus the kids to Kindergarten and then bring them back - the 2nd part of the day is called KE (Kindergarten Enrichment). This works best for me since I can drop off both kids at the same school/time.

A lot of schools are affiliated with an after-care program and you don't need to worry about being the one to do the drop off. Do you have something like that in your area?

Public and hopefully ILs can watch her afterwards. Or DH and I can swap off. It will such a huge cost savings.

My DD is in private Kindergarten this year, and the after care is built in. So convenient. Next year she'll be going to public 1st grade, and I will either reduce my hours or have her be bussed to the current private school she is at (they offer after school care).

@Freckles: our daycare is not affiliated with his elementary school. So, we would have to switch daycares.

Our daycare is affiliated with a private school, but our son is going to public Kindy. I am a big believer in public education.

After doing some research, I've discovered the YMCA offers before/after school care at our elementary school, so I think we'll actually do that instead of continuing at daycare since I think it will be cheaper!

We're big fans of public school. In fact, we may be moving very close to you for schools (and other reasons). Where we are now, I think we would choose homeschooling over private schools. The benefits of private schools in our area don't outweigh the things we would have to sacrifice... Mainly we would be spending a TON of time in the car. Not to mention the school we would choose cost more per year than mine and DH's yearly combined tuition in college.

My oldest stayed in daycare through Kindergarten - I dropped him off, and they picked him up. For first grade and beyond, I enrolled him in an on-site after school program offered at his elementary school.

@littlek: If we do make it to the other side of DC, Loudoun County will probably be our destination

The cheap after school program won't take them until they are in first grade. The only way to get into the other program is to be there from infancy so we don't qualify. So our choice is to do private kindergarten for that specific reason.
