When you pump at work, do you save your milk and take it home as part of your stash, or do you just pump and dump to keep supply up?
Apologies if this is a really dumb question... I feel clueless about so much regarding breastfeeding!

Noooo don't pump and dump ! My LO drinks what I pump at work the next day ! So tomorrow he will drink what I pumped today ! If I was dumping I would be throwing 20+ oz down the drain - tragic!

Save it for the next day's feedings and the freezer stash.

I plan to pump to have milk for LO to have the next day. I hope my supply keeps up with her and we don't have to dip into my meager freezer stash. If I'm extra lucky I will have extra so I can add to the stash.

@matador84: I put some in the freezer because all my LO's bottles are part BM and part F. I don't pump enough to cover her feedings.

@MsLipGloss: I wish I could! He pukes formula up and I'm a sissy and couldn't handle it. He only takes 2 4oz bottles a day and I wish I had some to keep back!

Save!! I bring it home and use it the next day. The stash is for emergencies!

@Pepper: oh God NO! The HORROR! I'm just kidding - sort of! I only get 8-9oz and I have to give my LO 16-17 the next day at daycare, so every drop I get at work is precious.

Liquid gold!!! Pumped milk is fed to him the Following day. Then wed (my last office day) I freeze that day's stash!

Looks like pumping and dumping is NOT recommended! Haha I'll have to invest in a cooler bag! Thanks everyone!

@Pepper: Woman are you mad?! Haha. Of course you save every single drop. I would NOT pump at work if I was dumping my milk. I saved it for the next day and anything extra I had above what LO normally drank would go towards the freezer stash.

Oh no! Don't dump it! Yes you take it home and either put it in the fridge for the next day or freeze it.

@Pepper: no worries! But yeah, save it, unless you have a super awesome job working as a wine taster

I save it. I make sure to freeze 4 oz of milk a day, give her at least 8 oz, and the rest of her feeds are formula. I take a tall bottle to work to pour the pumped milk into, then reattach the smaller bottles. FWIW.

@Pepper: i literally gasped when I read your question, ha! I usually pump the same (or more) that he needs for the next day. I freeze Friday's milk and on Monday nights I thaw some old milk out of my stash for Tuesday. (L doesn't go to daycare on Monday.)

What I pump goes to the sitter for DS the next day, extra is combined until I have a full bottle and anything leftover gets frozen.

OMG no don't pump and dump. Eeeek!
I send what I pump at work, with LO to daycare the following day. Anything extra, I leave it in the fridge and send that the following day along with however much from that day's pump I need to make up his bottles. (So if I pump 14 oz on Monday, he takes 13.5 oz while at daycare so I'll send 13.5 oz with him on Tuesday and keep .5 oz in the fridge. If I pump 14 oz on Tuesday, I put that leftover .5 oz in a bottle for Wednesday and add 13 oz from my Tuesday pump to his bottles, and then that 1 oz from Tuesday's pump gets saved in the fridge until Thursday. Etc.)
Then whatever I have left over in the fridge at the end of the week goes in the freezer (portioned, in bags) along with everything I pumped on Friday. I take out enough from the freezer on Sunday to thaw and send on Monday.
Basically I'm always just rolling milk forward into the next day so it's being consumed by LO within 24-48 hours, unless it's a Friday.
Hopefully that makes sense! So far I've been lucky to have a 1-3 bottle surplus at the end of the week to go into the freezer.

I think you get to save it, haha. I used milk pumped Monday on Tuesday and on and on. Unlike @ladyfingers, I used the milk I pumped on Friday to feed him Monday and never had a problem. Golden rule of breastmilk: if it looks ok, smells ok, and baby will take it, it's FINE! Never throw away milk just because it was left out longer than the guidelines say or because it was pumped a few days ago. Those guildelines are old and newer research suggests the human milk is much sturdier than people used to think.

@mrs. tictactoe: Yep, that's another way -- I'm not worried about my Friday milk not keeping, but I want to rotate the older milk out of my freezer stash, and doing it this way is easier than working in a bag every day!
I never throw out milk! The horror

like almost every other poster - what I pump during the work day I save and LO drinks the next day at daycare! I also save friday's pumped milk for monday....
oh - and the pump i got (Medela double electric tote one) came with a freezer bag & freezer thingy!

@ladyfingers: Oh yes, that's true - I never had much of a freezer stash to worry about!
