Maybe a condo but most places you'd need an absolute minimum of $400k but more likely $500k.

@bluestriped bee: in Raleigh (Wake County) - it would be mid 300s for a nice house and good school district and potentially a long commute. DH wants us to move to an area like that now before prices get worse but the thought of that commute makes me not want to consider it. If I WFH I would consider it.

nope! 300k could mayyyybe get you a nice apartment in good school district. But for a nice house in good school district I would say at least 500k.

@Mrs. Lion: I think housing prices have gone up in the past 2 years and it is harder to find a spacious house (4 bedrooms) under 300K. We have a 3 bedroom house under 2000 sq feet in Wake County with what some people consider so so schools and it's definitely comfortable for us for now but when looking to the future - it seems like we would need to spend in the 300s to get a 4 bedroom home in Wake County with a much worse commute. Prices have really gone up recently and houses are selling crazy quick.

@autumnleaves: We might just have different definitions of what nice is and what good schools are. We are looking at houses now just to get an idea for the next few years and I have found plenty that I love in the $225-300 range. But I don't see a 4 bedroom house as a need, so that might make a difference. I'm in southwest wake though, and neither DH or I really have much of an issue with a commute. We can both get to work in about 20 minutes.

HAHAHAHA no!! I don't think you can even buy a house anywhere within city limits (Seattle) for $300k.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
Holy s*** YES!!! My house is less than 1/3 of that price and the district is just fine.

@Alexandra603: lol. Another Seattle-ite here. Isn't it depressing??
A house within Seattle in a "good" school district will cost you at least $700k. And it typically will require some upgrades.
I'm so jealous of everyone else! We need to move.

@Raindrop: that was my first thought too! I'm in the Bay Area (north bay) and you would need at least 600-800k to buy a small condo in an ok school district. Houses in the good school district are more like 900k-2mil plus. Prices are ridiculous here.

@pinkcupcake: My coworker lived in the Bay area for years and could not afford a house but when he moved to Seattle, he could. He doesn't live in Seattle but in Lynnwood. I think Seattle area is a tad better than CA.

@bluestriped bee: Oh yeah, I was just referring to actual Seattle, not the surrounding suburbs.

I too am in California in the Bay Area and you need at least triple/quadruple that it's so crazy here

@bluestriped bee: a lot of people in the Bay Area want to Seattle bc the vibe is similar but it's way more affordable! My jaw drops at some of the pictures and prices on this thread (that are sooo affordable compared to where we are). I guess if we can never buy here.. time to move!!

@autumnleaves: @MrsLion: @jmarionsmith: so many wake county bees here! I'm also in wake (raleigh) and it seems to be so variable depending on which part of the county. prices are a little crazy in the specific area I'm in so it would be harder to find a "nice" house on that budget. but, we are really fortunate down here that at the county level, there are a lot of really good schools (and so many magnet options!) and that there are still lots of very affordable and nice places to live, too!

So interesting how big the range is! Couldn't find any single family homes under 300k either in our current neighborhood (pretty good elementary, ok middle, bad high school), or the neighborhood I want to move to (all good schools). These are closeish but with crappy-moderate schools. We're in the MD suburbs.

Holy crap yes. $150k is pretty much enough. A $300k house in my area is pretty extravagant.

Nope, nothing, not a chance. I am happy with our rent stabilized 2 bedroom apt. It's the closest I will get to owning anything any time soon. I am realizing I might rent for the rest of my life. I like to look at houses.... and wonder.

Where I live now, yes. Housing is shockingly affordable. In my hometown, hell no.

I actually think Zillow just laughed at me when I did a search for homes around 300k.
nectarine / 2521 posts
Very much a yes. For $60k less we purchased a 3500 square home in an excellent elementary school district with all the amenities we wanted too. To get into the good high school district in same type of neighborhood would be more like $350k- $400k, but you can easily get a nice home for $300k anywhere.

This is as close as I could get....🤑
Not a good neighborhood, poor schools, not a nice house $600k and things usually sell for 20-30% above asking so $720-$780k for a crapper.

I did a Zillow search in my zip code. One "house" came up. Is is a 292 sq ft studio in a 5th floor walk up. It has a toilet in the living room and orange shag covering all 292 sq ft. Including around the toilet.

@oliviaoblivia: That looks scary. But I could see potential of the house next to it didn't look condemned.
@Littlebit7: Why on earth did people think bathroom carpeting was a good idea???
nectarine / 2220 posts
Schools here are provincially managed, so they're relatively "equal" as far as resources.
$300K might buy you a studio apartment though.
persimmon / 1367 posts
Not really. Decent houses in decent school districts start at about $350,000. Nice and in a good school district starts around $500,000.

Omg. Sydney is horrific. For a nice house in the suburbs, you'd look at like.. 600-700k. It's terrifying.
pomelo / 5820 posts
Yep! We live in the top school district in our area (one of the top school districts in the state, too), and you can buy a nice 3-4 bedroom single family home here for that price. It's not going to be a mansion, but it'll still be very nice.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@oliviaoblivia: Haha. This looks like a "house" that sold in San Francisco: http://www.breitbart.com/california/2015/10/23/rotting-shack-sells-400000-san-francisco/
persimmon / 1339 posts
Well, a parking space in Bondi beach just went for $250000 so I'll say....no.
The median price for a 3 bedroom house in my suburb, which is directly under the flightpath and highway adjacent, just went up to $1.15M.
Sydney is bonkers, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else....

@ScarletBegonia: That is terrifying!!!
(I'm out in the 'burbs and it's INSANE. The house over the road from me just sold for 1.08m. IN THE NORTH WEST.)
persimmon / 1339 posts
@jaguar: I know its nuts - I'm on the outer edge of the Inner West and a 3 bedroom 3 doors down from me just sold for $1.355M. I mean, its great for our property value but if we sold, we couldn't afford to buy anywhere else!! Luckily we've got great public schools nearby but man...when is this bubble going to burst?
