We are very seriously planning out our next two years because of where we need to live for Charlie and Olive to attend a good elementary school. That got me to thinking... what if he got into the best gifted and talented program in Manhattan? Would we move so he could attend?
It is just such an awesome school (k-8) that I think we probably would. But of course we don't own so moving is not a big hardship for us.
Would you move if your LO got into the best school?

But in general, yes, I think we would move for the best school. It's part of the reason we are looking to rent our next place, not buy-- to give us a few more years to figure out what school system we want our kids in.

We spent an entire weekend reviewing all of the regulators' reports and school league tables before deciding what area to buy our house in, before we even got married!! But if our child got into a really great school that was further away from home, I'd just drive them in every day and, when they're older, get them a bus pass. If there was a catchment area issue, I'd definitely move!!

yep. it's a huge part of where we are looking at houses. i don't want to buy anywhere we couldn't send our kids to school, that way if we don't want to move or can't sell in time we don't have to worry about it.

We are buying our house based on a school. It is a great district but the number 1 district in our area is way too big and I don't like that idea. The school LO will go to (we live in the are now, just moving to a house), is on a much smaller scale, but definitely a good school all around. There are some schools about 15 minutes away that are horrible. She would never go to those!

We bought purposely where we did because we are by good schools. We are hoping to send LO to one particular school and if the right home came along we would move even closer.

In your case, yes I would! K-8 is a long time so it would be worth the move. If it was a preschool or a school you are only at for 3 years..no i'd just commute.

None of the schools here (and surrounding) are all that great, so we just picked the best neighborhood we could afford. If there's some awesome amazing school hiding somewhere in our town, then sure, we'd move.

We have a similar dilemma. We would move and rent out our place. It won't likely happen until 7th grade though.

We would, and probably will, but we rent too! We'd even be open to moving long distance. The public schools here are not an option, so we'll either go private or homeschool.

We plan on moving closer to the parish so our kids can go to DH's old elementary. We have the ok to be member even though we live outside boundaries. we plan on moving that way any ways. It's a much better area.
ETA: what happens if both kids don't get into the gifted school?

Yep...right now we're in one of the best school districts in the state, and we're trying to buy our house in the same one. There's areas around us that we have no desire to have our kids in the districts. It's a big part of our house buying plans.

I would be more apt to move for a high school than an elementary/grammar school . . . in the sense that it would carry more weight when LO was applying to colleges. Other than that, while I would love for LO to be in all the *best* schools, assuming there were/are other suitable options, I wouldn't move for a K-5 school.

We have an open school system here, but we're commiting to do a daily commute in the event that Lala gets into the best G&T program here!

@Andrea: @Sugar.Biscuit: @tequiero21: that would be the challenge. to get into the best gifted schools, you have to score 99% on the exam. 1000 kids qualify for 300 spots, so it is a pipe dream. siblings have priority and can get in with 97% scores.
the school systems seems to be very different in ny than anywhere else. many people travel to go to school starting at elementary, and by high school most everyone does.

@Mrs. Bee: I wonder about this too. We live in LIC, so I think we would just commute becaus ethe commute is pretty decent to just about anywhere in Manhattan.
