A few weekends ago, my DH was musing about wanting to live somewhere else and while I don't love our area, I feel invested in our schools now that we are starting elementary in the fall. He already has friends in the school and I have built friendships with parents there. I don't know how I would feel about moving once we start elementary. But it also stinks to think that we will be tied down to this city for the next 12 years...

Sure, if there was good reason to. Would this be a move out of state or in your same city?

Absolutely. I attended three elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools. It's fine and I was able to make friends at all of them despite being extremely shy.

Sure, I mean, things change all the time and one of the key things I want my son to be is adaptable.

Our son is nearly done with his first year of elementary school. We will definitely be leaving this city sometime in the next 2ish years. And I imagine will will uproot them at least 1-2 more times after that. We've always approached it as an adventure, so hopefully our LOs will see it that way too.

Yes, kids are adaptable- it's good practice for them handling change when they are older and if it's better for the family, then it will be good for the kids too.

Yes. We moved a lot growing up. It wasn't an issue for me to make new friends.

I would. I attended 4 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 1 high school as a child and adjusted fine.
Also, moving during elementary school is much easier than middle/high school.

I attended only one elementary school and stayed with that track all the way through high school. As did my my DH. (Different states) We are both very adaptable and easy going though.

I am happy we moved across the country before our kids were in school for that reason but I wouldn't let it keep me from moving either. Families have to do it all the time for various reasons and kids usually adjust and make new friends. I would have more concerns though if my child was really shy. I think getting them involved in sports, or church right away helps that though with a move.

Of course! I moved 4 times during elementary school and I'm totally ok. TBH the hardest move was between 10th and 11th grade. The others were easy.

Yes, my dad was in the military and we moved a lot. I went to 4 elementary schools. I loved moving. I thought it was an adventure getting to know a new place and make new friends.

I'd rather not but we would for the right reasons. But we bought this house with the idea that the kids will graduate from the local high school unless something changes.
I really do want to avoid moving around middle school age though. I just feel like that is such a hard time for kids, especially girls, and I wouldn't want to uproot them then if I could help it. Plus at that age you don't get to meet the MIT friends parents really, or even get to know the kids as well as when they are younger.
But I switched schools going into 3rd grade and don't have any negative memories about it at all.

I would move without hesitation up until middle school and after that it's something I would consider if it was an outstanding work opportunity.

Yes, but not as readily as before school. I went to three different elementary schools (changed four times-once back to the same school I had previously attended) and knew a lot of military kids that changed schools even more frequently.

If it was just a one time thing. I would rather do it on elementary than middle or high school.

I would be fine with moving in elementary school (we moved two times between K and 4th grade and I wound up back in the same school I started in).

I would really rather not. It would have to be a really good opportunity and I don't see that happening. I went to the same school district that my kids will from k-12. I love having friends that I've had since kindergarten. I want the same for my kids.

@Foodnerd81: I changed schools in 6th grade and 9th grade and it was a rough transition both times, and my DH moved in the middle of 7th grade and also had a bad experience. I am going to try very hard not to change my kids schools once my oldest starts kindergarten.... But if I had a great job opportunity I would consider it. DH and I both ended up surviving- and we ended up going to the same high school so you never know what good will come out of a rough move!

I should have put more thought into my answer, my son's school is in a totally different town and I have no idea what he will end up doing for high school, so there is at least one time when he'll be the new kid and that's going into 9th grade if we stay put.

@looch: I went to catholic schools and the high schools were all totally separate, so everyone was new, pretty much. Sure some people knew each other from grammar school but there was no "new kid". I'd be totally fine with that but we plan on public school.

Probably not, but maybe if I was miserable where I was. I moved a few times when I was a kid and felt like I missed out on some things. It's important for me for my kids to grow up in the same town and probably house their whole lives.

Yes bc we want LO(s) to go to schools we work at so finding the right school(s) for all of us will take some time and maybe some switches.

No. I moved a lot and made friends but I don't think it is good to have a kid 'learn' a whole new system if avoidable. I learned how to not get attached to people because they would all be new again when my parents decided to move again. Also, there will be gaps because each school's curriculum is spiraled differently from grade to grade in various subjects, even with common core. Maybe one move might be ok. Maybe.

Yes, we moved when I was in HS and my bro was in elementary. We both made friends. If I were to do it with my own family I would try to move at the start of school or during the start of the Spring quarter in an effort for LO to have class assignments completely wrapped up.

I wouldn't want to be shifting on the regular but we're a military family so relocating is part of our life.

Yes, but not after 6th grade. We moved a lot whe I was a kid (I changed schools 5 times) and it was really hard always starting over and I am jealous of my friends that have a history. Plus, for my last move it was beginning of high school. By then everyone is tracked, so you even wind up taking most of your specials with the same kids based on the way schedules fall. Because I was honors, I really only knew about 40 kids by the time I graduated (it was a small school, but still).
I feel like as long as they were somewhere 6th and up, that would be long enough to establish that connection and get a good feel for the whole grade level of kids. -
@Foodnerd81: My son is in public school. He's in a magnet school that will go k-8. I am not sure what we'll do for high school yet, it's totally up in the air at the moment and I am not really ready to worry about it yet. He'll likely be going to another town and might be the new kid, but he'll have to deal with it.

I wouldn't move like one town over for the heck of it. We specifically moved a couple years ago into a excellent school distract so our children could start school there right off the bat. But if it we were presented with a job opportunity that required a longer distance move we would certainly give it fair consideration.

I would move for necessity but would prefer to avoid it. We might move to the next town over (which would be the same high school and middle school as now either way bc it's regional) but I think we'd do that by kindergarten.
I moved when I was 5 and 12 and though I adjusted just fine and made lifelong friends in the town we ended up in I still feel slightly like an outsider sometimes. It's kind of a running joke among my friends that I'm not "really" from there. I would love for my LO to have the experience to have lived some place her whole life and also I think it would be really hard on me to have to start over.

Yes! Especially if I was unsure about staying in the area through HS. Much easier to move small children than teenagers, IMO.

Absolutely. I moved elementary schools after first grade and then stayed there all the way. DH moved to tons of different cities and different schools within those cities. I think he attended like 8 different schools. Because of that, he is less prone to want to move our kids, but he wouldn't have any problem doing it once or twice, especially when they're in elementary. I think both of us would be hesitant to move them while they were in junior high or high school because DH really wants them to feel like they have a hometown, something he doesn't feel like he has. If it was a good move for our family or a once in a lifetime opportunity, I think we would do it even then, though.
While DH comes from that school of thought, I would have probably thrived in a different school. We lived in the country near a small town and there was only one option for schools. I would have loved somewhere that offered more things, different friends to choose from, etc., so it's not always a bad thing to move.
