That's bizzare. Our daycare provides the mats and we bring in sheets, pillows, blankets, etc. and wash them once a week.

Is it going to be her personal mat that she will use?

Also, how will they store these if everyone doesn't buy the same one?

Our daycare provides a cot because I think its easier for them to not have to figure out who's is who's and they all stack together nicely.

@BabyBoecksMom: I have absolutely no experience with this but I would think that daycare should buy their own mats and sanitize them each night. You already give them enough money as it is!

I don't have children but I used to work in a daycare when I was in college and we provided the mats for the kids.

I said to just go ahead and buy it, but only because that's how I've heard about it being done here from parents I know. I have no idea how they know which one belongs to which kid, because each parent just brings *something* in. Some bring a cot, some bring a sleeping bag, some bring in a bunch of pillows sewn together (ala Pinterest...)

That kind of thing should be in their contract! If it doesn't explicitly say you are responsible for replacing mats, don't.

@BabyBoecksMom: Wow, yes I agree its upsetting you probably shouldn't be paying for this, but its CRAZY they would threaten to have her sleep on the floor.

Like I said, I would buy a huge solid cot that is hard for them to store and personalize the heck out of it.

Before that I was going to say probably just buy it. Now that DD's not in her bjorn travel crib anymore it would be nice to have something portable she could sleep on when we travel.

Does the daycare keep it after DD is done using it? If the daycare wants to keep it, then there should be a refund/deposit system in place. Otherwise, it's not fair the parent has to *replace* these old cots. I'd personalize the crap out of it.

That was not cool of the daycare to make threats.

I don't think you should have to provide it because I'm guessing you already pay them a heck of a lot so THEY should buy it. Saying LO will be sleeping on the floor otherwise is awful, not cool at all. If you buy one I agree with pps, personalize the heck out of it!

Assuming she'll be the only one to use it, and you'll get to keep it for the future (if you have another LO, or use at home as a playmat or dog's bed later on or something) I'd buy it. If they're wanting you to donate it to the daycare, that's another story.

@T.H.O.U.: DS's daycare has something very similar to this. We bring the bedding though, which I am totally fine with.

I think it is totally strange that daycare is asking you to purchase this. It would be like asking you to purchase playground equipment or toys.

Yeah, if they are forcing you to buy her mat, I would just buy whatever I want her to sleep on, not what they choose. The whole thing is strange.

Make sure they're aware you know it's a licensing infraction if they try to make her sleep on the floor. The fact that they even suggested that is ridiculous. They need to provide the mats or let you choose your own. When I was a childcare director I built these costs into the church's annual budget for the daycare.
