No, my grandma looked after my sister and me. Both of my kids are in a daycare centre. I think if we lived close to our families, we would probably go the route of grandma-care.

My mom worked and I went to a daycare center. I'm a SAHM so it's completely different.

My mom was a sahm and I am too. Will stay that way as long as it's working for us all.

My mom was a SAHM and growing up, I never wanted to be one because she isolated herself from everyone other than family.

I worked full time for the first two years, then while expecting my second LO, I desperately wanted to stay home. However, that wasn't financially feasible, so I changed careers and now I work part time for myself. While I was working full time, my mom was our child care.

We are both teachers so basically yeah, except we send LO to a nursery school rather than in home just because it was easier to find.

I don't want to be annoying, but maybe we can also add what our fathers did/believed and if there's any correlation between that and our childcare choices, too.

I happen to also WOH but I don't really think the two things are really related.

My mom SAH and my dad worked from home. I've never considered working while having young children and have SAH since getting pregnant and I think the way I was raised definitely played a part into that being my own desire.

My mom had 6 kids and sometimes was a SAHM for a couple of years and sometimes worked. She was a teacher, so she had holidays and summers off. For me specifically, she went back to work immediately when I was 6 weeks old, because my dad had been laid off and they needed the money. For my little sister, she stayed home for 2 years.

For all of us, she did return to work within a year or two, and she used both in-home childcare situations and centers. When I was 3-4, my parents started their own daycare and I went there until K, and then went to the after school and summer programs there until they sold the daycare when I was in 6thish grade. My dad always worked.

I do work, but have always been open to taking 1-2 years off after having a kid. I'm also a teacher and I do think I was influenced by my teacher mom (although I am the only one of us 6 that is in education now, so the other 5 were not influenced). None of my siblings with kids have ever been a total SAHM, although one of my sisters did cut her hours to part time for many years until both of her kids were in school. She's a marriage and family therapist. Now she co-owns her own practice, but still sets her hours at only 35 hours a week.

Both of my parents WOH full time, and so do DH and I. Once when I was little I was upset I couldn't do some after school activity because there was no late bus and my mom couldn't pick me up after it, and it seemed like everyone else's mom stayed home and could. So I asked her why she worked. She told me that she worked to provide a better life for our whole family. That we got to live in a nicer house, with a pool (which I loved), and take vacations, and afford all sorts of things that we wouldn't have been able to afford if she didn't work. She also explained that if anything happened to my dad she would need to be prepared to take care of us. It always kind of stuck with me.

@Anagram: I never talked to my dad about it like I did with my mom. I assume he was on board with my mom working, and I know his mom worked when he was growing up. His father also died when he was a teenager, so I'm sure he was supportive of my mom having a career after seeing what happened to his own family.

@ElbieKay: me too! I'm glad I'm not the only one that has that caused issues. It doesn't help that my parents divorced soon after I went to college so my mom needed much more of an identity (see also: job for income!) and now I think she exacerbates me more than she would otherwise. My mom was a SAHM and worked a little (only during school hours) once we were in school. I WOH now 3 d/wk and LO is in daycare those days. We had a nanny until my schedule was more regular. I think having an identity outside of "mom" (though I dearly love that part of myself!) is soooo important. Plus I worked my butt off for my profession and still have the loans to pay off

ETA: that being said, I don't think I suffered from being at home. Though I'll always wonder if I would be less introverted if I had more socialization earlier. I was too shy to do even overnight camps as a kid. I definitely did appreciate not having to take the bus and be able to do after school activities without limitations. And my summers we could do what we wanted without having to be in a camp. But i do feel like the socialization (other than the mommy/me type classes) would have been really helpful for my personality.

My mom was a SAHM the first 6 months or so and then when she started working I went to various in-home daycares. Once I started school I went to an in-home daycare until about 6th grade when I was able to talk her into letting me be home after school on my own (I think it helped ease her mind that our babysitter was just down the street).

My mom is an introvert and we never had playgroups, play dates. I remember being really lonely and when I started kindergarten everyone already knew each other from preschool.

Not really - my mom worked sporadically or part-time so I either had babysitters or went to a center every so often. It wasn't very consistent but it didn't bother me.

I work full-time so DS has a mixture of daycare and SIL and my mom to watch him. throughout the work week. I would love to stay home or work part-time.

There are other things that she did as a mother that I do duento what I learned/took away from her!

Yes & no.

My mom stayed home with me and my sister until I was 6ish? She stated a business with her friends that took off;which basically formed during play dates (amazing) and when they moved into a larger office they had a room for kids so I would go there after school, etc. then she started a second career & got MBA.

I work full time and have continued to do so. I would love to have a few years to take off to be with my kids, but A. We can't afford that, and B, my career would suffer too much to leave for that long I think.

My mom SAHM, I am WOHM due to necessity. If our lifestyle/income allowed I'd surely SAH but alas it doesn't so I must pull in the dough...
