When we were in the hospital, a pediatrician said she didn't like the mitten shirts b/c she thought babies benefitted from having their hands free.
My girl is 14.5 weeks and loves to chew her hands, move them all around, feel the back of her head....I wondered if the Zippy is more frustrating than helpful for hand-oriented babes like herself. Anyone else have experience or thoughts about this?

Hmmm... my little one is able to manipulate her paci and rub her face while in her zippy. She is 8 months old though, I don't know if that makes a difference. The main reason I keep her in it is because she likes to scratch/rub her eyes really hard when she's sleepy and it gives just a little layer of protection.

My DD ALWAYS wanted her arms and hands free she was swaddled for maybe a week post hospital and then we just let her be free, she was just fine!
Now at 4 months She rolls now and then but I thin she has figured that out!
She never liked to be constricted

My DD stares at her zipped hands and wonders where her hand goes lol! I woulds say that the zippy is good for not letting her scratch her face tho! But yeah she doesn't really like it either.

It just amazes (and comforts) me that so many Pediatricians give different advice and recommendations! I had concern about covering his hands when he slept and mine told me it didn't matter at all. As long as he could rub his face or chew/suck his hands it didn't matter if they were covered or not. At 8 months we still cover one of his hands with a sock because it instantly puts him in sleep mode 
He loves rubbing the material on his face. Though I do plan on phasing that out since he also uses a lovey. I have visions of him being in college and needing a sock on his left hand to sleep. Lol!

My LO loves her hands and loves her zippy!! She scratched the heck out of her face (due to said hand loving) so it's been a life saver. She actually gets a huge smile and starts flapping around when I tuck her hands in it.

@SweetiePie: I have had the same thought about differing advice before! That was the 1st time I had heard of the no mitten philosophy. On one hand, it sounds nice to let them be free and soothe naturally. But then I hear her gag herself and think her hands must get cold with all that slobber on them.
We were up for party time from 1-4 last night. To zip or not to zip honestly feels like the most important decision right now!

@Mrs.Someone: nice to see you, too! When did you start using it with your son?
She was up a lot last night, too, so I'm not sold on it yet. She is a little younger than the recommended 4 months though. She is doing a lot of twisting and turning and rocking around. I also heard her talk from about 3:30-4:30, making noises I haven't heard before. So many discoveries.

I ordered the zipadee thinking it would be a great swaddle transition. Not impressed - R just sucks his hands through the fabric which is gross! And I don't really see how it's better than a sleep sack!

@winniebee: I think the idea is that it restricts movement a bit. So if you have a baby with a strong Moro reflex they won't startle themselves awake. I found it was still too much freedom. So I did: swaddle, Merlin, zipadee, sleep sack.

@Peasinapod: Ok, I own a Zipadeezip, so I should be able to figure this out, but I'm still unclear as to how it restricts movement. She's still moving her arms all around and has started rotating 90 degrees in her crib.
In the spirit of optimism last night, I took my manual pump up to bed with me b/c I thought she might sleep past 3 hours and I would need to pump a little for relief. Ha!

@Happygal: I think the idea is the 'wing' limits their ability to fully extend their arms. I got freaked out and stopped using it when her arm was caught inside the body rather than wing so she couldn't flip off her tummy...

@Peasinapod: Scary! I had to reposition her arm last night after a diaper change and didn't think about how it could cause a problem with flipping. Thanks for letting me know.

@Happygal: I think we started using it at about 5 months. However long shipping took after he rolled in his swaddle 
Are her arms a little tight in the zippy? If not, it may be too big. I wouldn't worry about arms being caught in the "body" part, E did that all the time and it was never a problem.
