I have never heard of a push present. DH's mom told him to get me jewelry with the birth stone for my first mother's day but I told him I needed other things more than that.

My dad always got my mom something, but it was something practical and comfy, like a new robe and pjs. That is what my parents got me when LO was born. DH got me a spa day, but not really as a "you pushed this baby out" gift. It was more "your body has been through a lot. Go get a massage." It was a fabulous treat, even though I didn't end up using it for a while, what with the craziness of the newborn days.

I had never heard of them before coming on this site. I honestly think they are a bit ridiculous.

Haven't heard about it until HB and DH knows about the idea and I do believe I've told him that I don't really want one or need one. I know baby moons were also a online/HB thing but we went on one of those.
Oh, I did get myself an ipad that was purchased with the intention of using it while nursing and hopefully when/if I got pregnant. That was my gift to myself. Though, part of it was paid for by my work through an anniversary gift, so work paid for some of it.
ETA: To answer your question, not common to anyone IRL.

I have no clue! Everyone talks about it but I don't know if people actually get it?
I kept joking to DH about it, and since DD was due in Dec, he bought me a Christmas/push present!

I think they are kind of ridiculous. I'm sure after DH sees what I go through he'll be forever appreciative, but not expecting a "push present". DH and I buy each other and ourselves things throughout the year though, so thus are not present people... Maybe that's why I don't "get" the concept.
ETA: All that said, I think when I am done having kids, my reward will be to get to pick out the vehicle of my choice (which may be a bit of a splurge) - ha! So I'm holding out for that!

No, I don't think any of my friends have gotten them as far as I know. Christmas was a few weeks later and we didn't get each other gifts. It would have been kind of nice if I got a small one but we weren't really thinking clearly at the time!

I purchased an expensive triathlon racing bike when I was newly pregnant, I told the hubby it could be my pregnancy/push gift!

I know people who have gotten a meaningful piece of jewelry or something featuring their LO's initials or birth stone. No one would ever call it a push present, though, that term is terrible haha.

@mrsjyw: Oooo I love DY. Can we see it? All of my friends have gotten something, and frankly I know people roll their eyes but I think it's sweet. I have requested that we roll my birthday, anniversary, xmas, and push gift into one so I can get a Cartier rolling ring engraved with my, DW's, and DS's names when the time comes in November.

not really. Hubby surprised me with a bracelet as a "going back to work" gift at the end of my maternity leave. The inside is engraved with all 3 of our first initials and DS' birthdate. No birthstones - just a simple, silver bracelet that I can wear to the office and still look professional. (I love it!)

They are pretty common where I live. I received a necklace with DD's initial on it that I wear everyday and just love. I hope DH is planning on getting me the same one for DS once he arrives in Dec/Jan

I think they are. Everyone I've asked IRL has received one. My mom got one from my dad for each of us kids. It was jewelry both times and she's now passed on the jewelry to me. I loooove having that heirloom.
I never mentioned a push gift to DH. He was the one who took on the initiative all on his own. I'm excited that someday I'll pass on the earrings I got to my DD.

Wagon Sr. didn't know what a push present was, but at our last date night dinner before we had our first he gave me a pair of diamond stud earrings. He had wanted to get them for me for our wedding 4 years before, but he couldn't afford them then. I've worn them every single day since (almost 6 years straight)!

Most of my friends were given small gifts in recognition of the arrival of their babies (so more celebratory than reward which I think the term push present implies a little). I wanted a nice pair of earrings with my son's birthstone (yay for April babies) but DH far exceeded my expectations. This time around I really don't want anything so I'm sure DH will be content with letting me pick out my own mothers type jewelry later on when something catches my eye.

@mrsjyw: Yay! Congrats!! It sounds like a good time to me (although I may be biased - 11/19 EDD :)).

@wrkbrk: THAT WAS MY DUE DATE WITH DS! He was born 11/21!

I would say I know a fair amount of people that got one. But to be honest the name is horrible! Push present... It just rubs me the wrong way!

@junebugsmama: yea I don't like the terminology and none of my friends nor we call it that, but it's fairly common for a mama to get a gift associated with the birth of a child around our circle of friends.

Not sure how common they are around here, but I got something both times

I tried to convince my husband they were but he never went for it!
