We havent been trough this but my DS has been trained since May and he still has nighttime/early morning accidents at least once a week in his underwear. I think it may be just a developmental thing. Your DS is still very new to this. He knows what the right thing to do is, but maybe he's panicking. I wonder if his knowing he can't get out of the crib himself is exacerbating that. Also my DS has accidents here and there where he just cannot make it to the potty in time. He will literally go right in front of it. That just tells you how much of a learning experience it is for them (and potentially for quite a while). I would give it some more time and try to be patient. make sure he goes pee immediately before bedtime, etc.. And maybe consider letting down one side of the crib?

No good advice because my LO went through a naked phase for a few months. She took off her clothes, pjs and diapers during naps and night sleep and slept in the buff under her AA blanket.

She now tolerates a diaper (cloth or Target disposable) at night and usually wakes up dry. She hates it when we call it a diaper and refers to it as a nighttime cover!

DS1 has done this a few times no advice, good luck!

@mrbee: I was going to make the same suggestion.

My son transitioned to a twin about 3 months after he was potty trained (she he was about 33 months). Going on the suggestion of a family member, we put the potty in his room in case he needed to go at night. I was totally dubious that it would work, but it did! Occasionally, he would wake up, get out of bed, pee on his own and manage to get back into bed with no problems. Once or twice he missed (but we have hardwood, so no biggie), but overall, it has been much more successful than what I would have imagined.

We're in a similar situation. DD is 29 months, and we started potty training her Labor Day weekend.

Now that she is potty trained (day time and practically nap trained). She hates diapers and will take them off in bed too, I think its good that she doesn't like her diapers - that means she's more aware of when she needs to go to the bathroom and she wants to use the potty not a diaper.

DD sleeps in a "big girl bed" and we have a Baby Bjorn potty on the floor of her room. I watch her more closely on the video monitor. If the diaper comes off, I put her on the potty, then put her back to bed (diaper on). I tell her the diaper is "just in case" she doesn't wake up when she needs to go potty. Because that is exactly what it is - when she goes to the bathroom in her sleep (versus when she's in bed and hasn't fallen asleep yet, or in bed, but we haven't gotten her out of bed yet), or when she wakes up in the middle of the night and needs to go.

She hasn't attempted to use the potty in her room by herself - yet, but she has yelled for us over the baby monitor when she is in bed and needs to go to the bathroom. So a few nights, she's actually been accident free (because she alerted us at 10, she used the potty, and didn't need to go again until morning).

No advice (we're mid process, so I'm not qualified to give advice), but sympathy. Potty training is EXHAUSTING.

I would suggest switching to the toddler bed. I think if he is potty trained he should be able to get out and go. I know you said you aren't sure if he would get up on his own and go but give it a try, kids can surprise you sometimes!

@irene: You gotta have a little confidence in your kid!

We have an integrated nightlight in the outlet in the hall, plus a nightlight on in the bathroom.

@irene: As for walking down the hall to the bathroom at night, in our new apartment, my son's bedroom is right next to the bathroom. In the last month he now gets up, turns on all the lights, goes to the toilet and then turns the lights off and goes back to bed, so it can be done! He does have a nightlight though, so that when he first wakes up, it isn't completely dark.

I agree with others that he needs to be able to get out of bed on his own.

When my kids were 1st put in a big bed I told them that if they needed something to come in my room and get me - do you think your DS would do that? That way when he wakes up and has to pee he can come get you, you can help him go and then put his diaper back on and back in bed.
