@MrsScallop: I hope they do get him well enough so maybe you can hold him over Christmas! It'd be nice if they can just get the surgeries over with but I also see that it'd be nice to give him a lil gap. Lots of hugs and over for the days ahead; I know the surgery will go great!

@winniebee: So sorry T is so sick! I hope he gets better soon so you can get more rest! I can't imagine trying to feed a newborn while dealing with a sick toddler
@whenoceansrise: Sorry you are feeling like a mess! I am definitely that way too and those hormones really make everything more difficult. The drs here probably think I am crazy as I am always tearing up. Hang in there, and try to not stress too much about feeding every two hours as long as he has a good number of wet/dirty diapers and is gaining weight well. Otherwise, have you tried undressing him, putting a cool wet cloth on him, or anything else to wake him up? My first LO was very sleepy and I had to try some tricks to keep her awake enough to eat sometimes.

@snowjewelz: I like walks in the carrier for entertainment. I can talk about what we're seeing or feeling, and it's nice to get out of the house. Other than that, it's the same as you - making faces, singing, etc. We pulled out her sister's activity mat, but she's not that interested yet. If she's a good girl, Santa might bring her a new one next week, and I think she'll be into it soon.

@FaithFertility: Seriously about resting in the hospital! People kept telling me I needed to rest/pump, but every time I tried to do one of those things, someone was in talking to me, poking my belly, looking at my boobs, asking to talk to me about Charlie, giving me paperwork, etc. Things are finally a lot quieter now, but I'm still exhausted.

@BandDmommy: Glad to hear your husband is okay!
@MrsF: Sorry to hear about your rough night! Hopefully tonight is better.
@winniebee: No set bedtime for us yet. Last night, Logan went down around 7:00 and then woke up to eat at 9:00, 12:00, 3:00, and 6:00. But other nights, he'll cluster feed until 8:00 or 9:00. Yesterday his cluster feeding was earlier, so I think that's why he was down at 7:00.
@snowjewelz: I never know what to do with a baby, haha. I tend to just lie Logan down on his activity mat and let him squirm around! I put it by the tree so he has something interesting to look at, but otherwise, I don't know what I'm doing.
@whenoceansrise: I hear you about the emotions! I was the same with Xander! I cried for WEEKS! And my husband would keep asking me what was wrong or what I was feeling overwhelmed about, and there was really no answer. The emotions are CRAZY during the first weeks after you have your baby! But it eventually does get better!
@MrsScallop: Sooooooooo happy to hear that Charlie is doing well!! What a bummer about him being transferred so far away though and that he'll be there until after New Year's! I want you to be able to take him home!!!! But at least he's in good hands! I have no advice about pumping, although 1 oz per hour was basically what I got when I was pumping at work with Xander, so that sounds good to me!

So I think we're dealing with a lip tie issue here. The pain with nursing has become excruciating and I'm now dreading it every single time. It may also be the reason he's nursing so often if he's not able to transfer effectively. I don't get it though because the first two weeks seemed okay and he gained weight like a champ and now nursing is soooooooo painful. I'm back to lathering lanolin on after every feed. I'm calling an ENT on Monday to get him checked out... hopefully we can get in soon because I can't handle this pain for much longer...

@rattles: yea I havent pulled out her playmat either! I did take out a soft rattle toy to wave it in front of her during the day lol
@Adira: oh no! That is so strange. I joined a tongue/lip tie group on FB, I will poke around there to see if there are similar situation to yours. Could you nurse more on the other side and maybe pump this side?
grapefruit / 4903 posts
@Adira: L had a slight lip tie as a newborn. I don't know if it would help, but one temporary trick our LC taught me was to use my thumb nail to flip out her upper lip after she latched. Is there nipple damage causing the pain at this point?

@whenoceansrise: I remember feeling exactly the same way with my daughter. The first days are SO hard. It's easier the second time because I know from experience that we will find our groove again and that this is just one tiny difficult moment in our lives. Everyone told me that the first time but I couldn't believe it until I had experienced it myself. I hope things feel more manageable soon!

@MrsScallop: so glad that Charlie is doing better and might be extubated soon. Such wonderful news! It must be so hard to wait for the surgery but great that he is doing well!

@Adira: I hope the ENT can help! Strange that the pain is getting worse now but I don know anything about tongue/ lip ties. I hope you get some answers!

Thanks everyone for your advice! I am feeling so much better today. I feel less sore but am still needing to take my pain medication. Micah seems to be eating better today. He has an appointment with his pediatrician Monday and I'll feel better getting all of my questions answered. feeling hopeful that we'll start to get the hang of things!

@whenoceansrise: It's still early so don't put so much pressure on yourself! I was SO stressed until Kara gained back her birth weight! And every time she goes out of the "norm" I get really frustrated... Just have to remind myself that she's a brand new human being and it's gonna take a while for us all to adjust!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@rattles: Thanks for the tip! I tried flipping his upper lip out with my thumb nail during our last nursing session and I actually think it helped! I'll keep trying to do that until I can get in to see an ENT.
@MrsF: Yeah, I wonder if it's always been bothering my nipple, but not that bad, but just the constant nursing is aggravating it and making it worse each time? I have no idea!

Sorry, stalker here! I love reading the new baby boards
@Adira: could it be thrush that is causing so much pain? It is pretty common about 2 weeks after delivery especially if you got antibiotics in labour. It is a huge tip off if you've had a period of pain free nursing followed by lots of pain. Are there any white patches in your son's mouth?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@QBbride: Thanks! I actually just checked for white spots because I was reading about thrush, but I don't see anything, so I don't think that's it. But it's definitely weird that the pain has come up so suddenly!
pomegranate / 3192 posts
@Adira: yeah definitely keep an eye on it! You can actually have thrush without the white patches in babe's mouth. We had thrush and it was soo incredibly painful!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@QBbride: Thanks! I'm still going to have him checked for a lip tie, but if that turns out not to be the case, then maybe it is thrush!

Girls, I'm nervous about tonight! I feel like Logan has been sleeping a ton today and hasn't been eating as much, so I think I might be in for an awake hungry baby tonight!
honeydew / 7283 posts
@Adira: I know the feeling! I get so happy when he's sleeping, and then I start to worry that he won't sleep at night! I pretty bad at predicting which will be good nights and which will be bad nights. I hope he surprises you!
I'm feeling anxious about tonight because last night was so bad... Hopefully we're due for a good night.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@MrsF: I hope for a good night for you too!
@Adira: it's better if its thrush..? I hope it doesn't get worse!
Kara ate alllllll dayyyyy today... She is 2 weeks 2 days. Another growth spurt?!

After stocking up on a great deal on formula, I'm starting to think we might need to change formula. K has been so gassy and fussy and the gas drops don't seem to be helping. C drank Similac Sensitive and I don't know why I didn't just get the same for K. We've been doing Similac Advanced. I'm hoping I can exchange the unopened containers.
That's how we are spending our days/nights with a fussy and gassy baby. She's also got a full face of baby acne. So much for her perfect skin.

I'm in the nervous about tonight club! My husband has post nasal drip so waiting for the other shoe to drop for me.
Ryan has had a lot of spit up today. I know I have a forceful let down and he's a guzzler but until today it's just been a little dribble of spit up here and there. Today there were two really big ones where it seemed like he spit up a whole feed. I wonder why all of a sudden?
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@Adira: is there something about the latch that makes you think lip tie?
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@whenoceansrise: I'm sorry! The hormone crash is so hard. I had it so badly with my first. We are here for you! tips for waking him - strip him down to diaper, use damp wash cloth on face.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@MamaG: I bet you can exchange them or even sell them on HB classifieds
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@snowjewelz: haha, I have no idea!! Both are treatable I think? And 2 weeks is the time of a growth spurt, so probably!!!
@MamaG: Sorry to hear the formula you're on isn't working out. I hope you're able to exchange it and the Sensitive version is better! And boo for baby acne!
@winniebee: Xander used to spit up all the time as a baby, but it never seemed to bother him. I think it's common for them to start spitting up more, although if it's all the time or is bothering him, that might indicate something is wrong?
One of the Bees mentioned to me that the clicking noise during nursing indicated a lip tie for them and their LO and so I pulled up Logan's upper lip and I think maybe he really does have a lip tie. I'll try to get a picture next time he's up. But also, when he's latched, his upper lip doesn't seem flanged out, which I think is why it's hurting.
@whenoceansrise: The hormone crash for my #1 was the worst. I was a wreck for WEEKS, so I hope you start feeling better before I did. It didn't help that nursing was so hard and I was so sore all the time, so that's probably affecting you too! I felt overwhelmed even by the smallest tasks (like getting the baby to the pediatrician's office) and the idea of my husband returning to work would make me cry! I hope you feel better soon!
honeydew / 7283 posts
@MamaG: sorry about the formula (and even more sorry about the fussy / gassy baby )! I bet you can exchange the unopened cans.

@Adira: My GF at work said her twins had lip ties from what she described it might be!

@whenoceansrise: we seem to be on that schedule too, I was letting her sleep past 3 hrs but today decided to wake her. ...seems to be working, her feedings seem longer
..my trick to wake her is strip her and change her
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@Adira: that looks normal to me but what do I know?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@winniebee: Maybe both our LOs have lip ties! But I don't know what is normal either.

Busy day on here!
@whenoceansrise: I was emotional also the first week and a fussy baby night one home didn't help. It gets better!
We had our first Christmas get together today and E was held all day and slept all day so tonight should be interesting. Last night he was up every two hours but he went right back to sleep after nursing vs. Grunting/whining for awhile. I will gladly take that!
Trying to get my Christmas cards done and E just wants to be held now.
pomegranate / 3973 posts
@snowjewelz: I do have Ethan's playmat out and will usually lay him on it for maybe 10-20 minutes a day, he loves to stare at the Xmas lights on the tree right now, and I give him tummy time on the mat, he actually likes being in his belly more than his back.
nectarine / 2053 posts
@MamaG: what does baby acne look like? I think Micah has it on his face but I googled images of baby acne and it all looks way worse than what he has. Not sure what else it could be though! And he has newborn pictures scheduled for Monday so I'm hoping it goes away!

Had to supplement with my precious pumped milk tonight... I guess my milk isn't coming in fast enough for her high demand today. I was trying to hold out till later to feed her so she'd sleep for a longer stretch tonight but she couldn't wait! I guess I'll be pumping soon, hopefully I can at least replace the 2 oz she drank!
nectarine / 2631 posts
@Adira: yes it is. B has one and it never affected us with nursing. E has one too- not sure if that is contributing to the pain I am feeling or if I just forgot how much it hurts at first!
pomegranate / 3973 posts
@snowjewelz: I had to supplement with formula last night, e nursed for an hour and was still rooting, and pretty sure I was out of milk.
I've only got 4 oz. Of pumped milk so far.
E has baby acne now also on his checks, is there a way to help clear it or will he just grow out of it
